Custom Trips Portugal Spending Money

Portugal Travel Guide

How much spending money for Portugal?

Portugal is one of Western Europe's best value destinations — exceptional food and wine at prices that feel almost implausible by French or British standards, world-class restaurants accessible at every budget, and a coast that doesn't charge the Mediterranean premium. Here's what to realistically expect day to day.

All prices are in USD. Accommodation and transport between cities are handled as part of your custom trip with us — the costs below cover food, drinks, activities, shopping, and tips.

The Big Picture

The most affordable country in Western Europe — without compromising on quality.

Portugal consistently surprises people with how far their money goes. A three-course lunch with wine at a good Lisbon restaurant costs what a sandwich and a coffee would in Paris. A bottle of excellent Alentejo red at a neighbourhood restaurant in Évora is almost embarrassingly inexpensive for the quality. The Algarve in high summer is the most expensive point on the itinerary — but still significantly cheaper than comparable coast in Spain, France, or Italy.

Food and wine are where Portugal really stands out. The tradition of the menú do dia — a fixed three-course lunch with wine and coffee — means eating an excellent midday meal for $12–20 almost everywhere. Everything else is taken care of when we plan your Portugal trip.

The menú do dia is Portugal's best secret

A fixed three-course lunch with wine, bread, and coffee for $12–20 at almost every restaurant. It's how locals eat their main meal of the day — and it's consistently the best value eating experience on the trip. Order it wherever you see it on the board outside.

Wine is exceptional and very inexpensive

Portugal produces some of Europe's most interesting wines — Vinho Verde in the north, powerful Alentejo reds in the interior, and the still wines of the Douro Valley. A glass of good wine at a restaurant runs $3–6. A bottle of genuinely excellent wine rarely exceeds $25, even at a good restaurant.

Port wine tastings are a highlight and a bargain

A tasting at one of the great port wine lodges in Vila Nova de Gaia — including a guided cellar tour — runs $15–30 per person depending on the lodge and the range tasted. For the experience of ageing barrels, 200-year-old cellars, and a glass of vintage tawny overlooking the Douro, this represents extraordinary value.

The Algarve costs more — plan accordingly

Beach restaurants, boat tours, and drinks in Lagos and Tavira run 20–30% higher than in Lisbon or Porto. Still very good value by Mediterranean standards, but your $80 city day becomes a $105 coastal day. We make sure you know what to expect at each stop.

From Our Experience

How to make your money go further.

01

Order the menú do dia every day at lunch

A three-course lunch with wine, bread, and coffee for $12–20 is available at almost every restaurant in Portugal from Monday to Friday. It's not a tourist menu — it's what everyone eats at midday — and it's consistently excellent. Making this the main meal of the day and eating lightly in the evening is both the Portuguese way and the most economical approach to the trip.
02

Know about the couvert

Bread, olives, butter, and small cheese or charcuterie placed on the table at the start of a meal are not complimentary in Portugal — they're charged per item, typically $1–3 each. It's a deeply embedded custom and not a tourist trap, but it surprises people who aren't expecting it. You're entirely within your rights to decline them or send them back.
03

Drink the house wine — it's genuinely good

Portugal's house wines — vinho da casa — are almost always from the region and almost always excellent. A glass costs $2–4 and is what most locals drink with lunch. The country's wine culture means even the most modest restaurant takes its wine seriously. Save the bottle selection for dinner at a good restaurant where the list is worth exploring.
04

Budget the port lodge and Alentejo tasting properly

A port wine lodge tasting in Vila Nova de Gaia runs $15–35 per person — one of the great experiences on the trip and excellent value for the quality. The Alentejo wine estate visit is similarly well-priced at $15–50. Budget for both as planned activities rather than spontaneous extras and they'll be among the highlights you talk about most when you get home.
05

Eat grilled fish on the Algarve coast

The Algarve's grilled fish — particularly the sardines, sea bream (dourada), and bass (robalo) served at beachside restaurants — is both exceptional and very good value compared to what the same quality would cost elsewhere in Europe. Order the fish of the day grilled simply with olive oil and lemon, a bottle of local white, and eat outside. It's one of the meals people mention most.
06

Ask us before you go

Spending varies meaningfully between Porto, Lisbon, Évora, and the Algarve. The Alentejo is the most affordable stop; the Algarve in summer is the most expensive. When we design your trip we'll give you a clear picture of what to expect at each stop — including which restaurants to book in advance and which experiences are worth the spend.
