Greece Travel Guide

How much spending money for Greece?

Greece spans a wide range — from inexpensive taverna meals and local wine to Santorini cave suite dining and private boat charters. Here's what to expect at every level.

All prices are in USD. Accommodation and transport between islands are handled as part of your custom trip with us — the costs below cover food, drinks, activities, shopping, and tips.

Why Greece Is Different

Exceptional value at every level of travel.

Greece is not the cheapest destination in Europe, but it's a remarkable value relative to what you get. A long lunch of fresh grilled fish, salad, local wine, and a view of the Aegean can cost less than a mediocre pasta in Rome. Even at the higher end — cave hotels in Santorini, private boat days on Milos — the quality-to-price ratio is extraordinary by Western European standards.

The numbers below reflect what we've seen our clients actually spend over 25 years of designing Greece trips — not guidebook estimates, but real daily spending across different travel styles. The shoulder months (May, June, September) offer the same experience at meaningfully lower prices than peak season.

Taverna culture is the sweet spot

A full taverna meal — mezze, grilled fish or meat, salad, local wine, dessert — costs $25–45 per person at a genuinely excellent local restaurant. This is the heart of eating well in Greece.

Local wine is very affordable

House wine and local bottles are inexpensive and consistently good. A carafe of house white at a taverna costs $6–10. Santorini's Assyrtiko is a step up but still reasonable by global wine standards.

Island prices vary significantly

Santorini and Mykonos are the most expensive islands — restaurant prices are 30–50% higher than on quieter islands like Naxos, Paros, or Crete. We factor this into your planning.

Cards are widely accepted

Greece is increasingly card-friendly, especially in tourist areas. Smaller tavernas and markets may still prefer cash. We recommend keeping some euros on hand for smaller islands and local stops.

From 25 Years of Experience

How to make your money go further.

01

Go shoulder season

May, June, and September offer the same scenery, the same sea, and the same food as July and August — at meaningfully lower prices with far fewer people. The light in these months is extraordinary and the tavernas actually have room for you.
02

Balance your islands by price

Santorini and Mykonos are the most expensive islands. Pairing them with Naxos, Paros, or Crete — where the food and experience are often just as good at half the price — balances your overall trip spend considerably.
03

Eat the mezze

Sharing plates of mezze — tzatziki, taramasalata, grilled octopus, saganaki — are often the best and most affordable way to eat in Greece. A table of four sharing mezze and a carafe of local wine is one of the great travel experiences, and it doesn't break the bank.
04

The private boat day is worth it

On Milos especially, a private boat to access the sea caves and hidden coves feels extravagant until you're actually doing it — and the price, split between a couple or group, is remarkably accessible by global standards. One of the best spending decisions our clients make.
05

Carry euros on smaller islands

The main tourist islands are card-friendly, but smaller villages, local bakeries, and market stalls often prefer cash. Keep a reasonable supply of euros — the local ATMs work well, but fees add up if you're withdrawing small amounts frequently.
06

Ask us before you go

Spending in Greece varies significantly by island, season, and travel style. When we design your trip we'll give you a realistic picture of what to budget for your specific itinerary — so you arrive prepared and spend your energy on the trip itself.
