Custom Trips Bali & the Gili Islands Spending Money

Bali Travel Guide

How much spending money for Bali?

Bali is one of the world's most extraordinary value destinations — private pool villas, world-class food, and spa days at prices that feel almost impossible. Here's what to realistically expect day to day.

All prices are in USD. Accommodation, fast boats to the Gili Islands, and transport are handled as part of your custom trip with us — the costs below cover food, drinks, activities, shopping, and tips.

Why Bali Is Different

World-class quality at a fraction of the price.

Bali's quality-to-cost ratio is genuinely extraordinary. A villa with a private pool and a jungle view — the kind of stay that would cost thousands per night in the Maldives or Amalfi — is accessible here at a price that surprises almost everyone. The food is outstanding, the spas are world-class, and the daily experiences that make a trip memorable cost a fraction of what they would at home.

The numbers below reflect what our clients actually spend across different travel styles — from warung lunches and local beer to fine dining in Seminyak and spa afternoons in Ubud. The one variable that consistently catches people off guard is how much they want to spend on spa treatments. Budget for more than you think. Warungs are the heart of eating well

A warung (local Balinese restaurant) serves nasi goreng, mie goreng, satay, and fresh juices for $3–7. These are not just budget options — some of the most memorable meals in Bali happen at plastic tables with no menu in sight.

Spas are outstanding and very affordable

A one-hour traditional Balinese massage at a reputable spa costs $12–25. A full day spa package — massage, scrub, flower bath — runs $60–120 at genuinely excellent establishments. Most clients wish they'd booked more.

Cash is still preferred locally

Indonesian rupiah (IDR) is the currency. Larger restaurants and hotels take cards, but warungs, markets, and local drivers are cash only. ATMs are widely available in tourist areas.

The Gili Islands add some cost

Food and accommodation on the Gili Islands carry a small premium over Bali — everything arrives by boat. Restaurant meals are $10–25 per person. Factor in slightly higher daily spending for the days you're on the islands.

Daily Spending by Style

What does a day in Bali actually cost?

Realistic daily spending estimates per person — covering food, drinks, activities, spa, tips, and incidentals. Not including shopping, which varies enormously.

Budget

Local Style

$40–65
per person / day
Warung meals, local beer, self-guided temple visits, and a massage at a neighbourhood spa. Bali at this level is genuinely brilliant — the quality of the food and experience bears no relation to the price you pay.
Warung lunch$3–6
Local restaurant dinner$8–15
Local beer (Bintang)$1.50–3
Temple entry / activities$5–12
Massage (1hr)$8–15
Mid-Range

Comfortable

$90–150
per person / day
Where most of our clients land. Good restaurants in Ubud or Seminyak, cocktails at a beach club, a guided temple or rice terrace visit, and a proper spa afternoon. Bali at this level exceeds almost every expectation.
Café lunch$10–18
Good restaurant dinner$22–45
Cocktails / craft beer$15–25
Guided tour or activity$25–50
Spa treatment$20–40
Higher End

Indulgent

$160–280+
per person / day
Fine dining in Seminyak, beach clubs with bottle service, full-day spa packages, private drivers and guides, sunset dinners in Ubud's jungle. Even here, Bali remains extraordinary value. The same experience in Mykonos or St Tropez would cost three times as much.
Upscale lunch$25–45
Fine dining dinner$55–110
Premium drinks & beach club$40–80
Private guide / experience$40–80
Full-day spa package$60–120

From 25 Years of Experience

How to make your money go further.

01

Eat at warungs

The best food in Bali is often at a plastic table with no English menu. Warungs serve fresh, cooked-to-order Balinese food for $3–6 a plate and are how most Balinese eat every day. The flavours are extraordinary. We point you to the right ones.
02

Budget generously for spas

Almost everyone wishes they'd booked more spa time in Bali. The quality is extraordinary and the prices are a fraction of what you'd pay at home. A full-day spa package — massage, scrub, flower bath — at a genuinely excellent spa runs $60–120. It's worth planning for it in advance.
03

Mix your restaurants

The smart approach is to eat at warungs for lunch and save the good restaurants for dinner — when the setting, the service, and the occasion justify the price. Seminyak and Ubud both have world-class dining that punches far above its price point.
04

Carry rupiah for the Gilis

Cards are accepted at most restaurants and hotels on Gili Trawangan, but Gili Air and Meno lean more cash-dependent. The ATM on Gili T can run dry during busy periods — take enough cash when you cross from Bali to avoid the scramble.
05

The beach clubs are worth it — once

Bali's famous beach clubs (Potato Head, Ku De Ta, and others) have minimum spends and premium drink prices. They're a genuine experience and worth doing — but once, not every day. We build them into the right part of your itinerary so they feel special rather than routine.
06

Ask us before you go

Spending varies considerably between Ubud, the south, and the Gili Islands. When we design your trip we'll give you a clear picture of what to expect for your specific itinerary and travel style — so you arrive with the right amount and spend it on the things that matter.
