It always seems to be the boat rides… There I was sitting in the sun, feet hanging off the deck over the crystal blue ocean of the Andaman Sea. It was my first trip on my own and all I had was a backpack and a budget. I remember looking out over the almost too perfect horizon of Thailand’s south west coast. It had only been a couple of weeks but I was surrounded by some of the best people I have ever met and it was only the beginning of my time in Thailand.
I have always loved traveling whether it’s been weekend road-trips with the guys or two-week sunny vacations with the family. It’s something about getting away from home and leaving everything behind. When you’re on the road and you don’t have to worry about that homework assignment due next week or the overdue cell phone bill you keep forgetting to pay. You can just escape and live for the moment with no worries or fears. Everyday is as beautiful as the last and well, tomorrow just doesn’t matter.
I’m currently a third-year commerce student at the university of Saskatchewan. I was born and raised in this beautiful flat province and wouldn’t have it any other way. While growing up, my family always placed importance on enjoying life and exploring new ideas and places. but it wasn’t until 2006 that I found myself on a plane to Thailand. I never imagined Thailand would take a hold of me like it did, but it grabbed me and just won’t let go! Exploring a new culture opened doors in my life I never knew existed.
Travel became almost a way of life and I was willing to do anything to get back to that beautiful country. Sure enough, eight months later I was sitting on a plane again excited to see some new countries and meet some new friends. After a month in Thailand I headed further East and explored more of South East Asia. I have met some of the best people I will ever know and experienced amazing new cultures- all thanks to travel. There are so many reasons to explore Thailand and I think every reason is as good as the last. No matter what you’re into you will find something you love in Thailand. Frisbee on a sunny beach, lounging in a hammock in the shade, or kayaking to the next island for the day- Its all up to you and its all right in front of you. There is no such thing as a bad day in Thailand, or at least I haven’t found a way. The rain is warm, the breeze is refreshing, and the ocean is as blue as the sky…Thailand just has an amazing ability to make you forget about the negatives or everyday life. Suddenly everyone you meet is as cool as your best friend and every meal you have is the most delicious thing you have ever tasted.
I can’t stress enough how incredible my Thailand experience has been and I know countless others who feel the same. The country, the culture, the scenery, the food- everything. Free and easy is known for offering an incredible once in a life time experience and I can’t wait to see you all on those sunny beaches with me.
