Undiscovered Caribbean

Experience some of the hidden gems and cultural wonders of Nicaragua and Central America during 10 days of adrenaline-fuelling adventure and relaxed Caribbean vibes. If you love snowboarding then get this–the Cerro Negro Volcano outside Léon is one of the only places in the world where you can go Volcano Boarding! León is also a cultural hotspot where you’ll get to learn about its Spanish colonial architecture and the Nicaraguan Revolution. Then you’ll hop over to the warm Caribbean beaches of the Corn Islands, perfect for both scuba diving and hammock enthusiasts. Cap everything off by spending a couple nights chilling in the jungle on the edge of Laguna de Apoyo, a volcanic crater lake. What more could you want in a 10-day trip?!

Undiscovered Caribbean
Nicaragua
León

Surrounded by a score of towering volcanoes, including Nicaragua's national symbol: Volcán Momotombo, León is a city that has long since been destined to be great. The liberal epicentre of the country, León has always been a fiercely political and artistic city filled with students and bright-minds eager to change to progress their country. The vibe on the streets is very fun and relaxed compared to other places in the relatively conservative country of Nicaragua and makes for a great setting for our groups to interact with locals and join in on their fun and wild bar scene. Catedral de León rises majestically at the centre of the city and maintains the wonderful colonial feel and accentuates the cultural beauty that the locals in León are so proud of!

Nicaragua
The Corn Islands

70 km from Nicaragua's east coast, the Corn Islands is a completely unique place to the rest of the country. Life here is traditionally Caribbean and a cool island dialect of English is spoken prevalently. Pristine turquoise water and shimmering white beaches paint the backdrop for a simple life of simple pleasures. Reggae music is heard most of the day and when we spend 5 days here on our trip we don't do much more than chill on the beaches, kick-back with the locals and eat some of the most incredible seafood in the world! You'll feel so relaxed on The Corn Islands you'll wonder why you're not always living as if you're in the Caribbean.

Laguna de Apoyo

Laguna de Apoyo is a pristine lake inside the crater of a dormant volcano. After being declared a national nature reserve in 1991, Laguna de Apoyo has been fiercely protected from invasive resorts and remains a beautiful natural refuge. The stunning lagoon is warmed to a comfortable temperature from the earth's core and is widely hailed as having the cleanest water in Central America. A variety of exotic wildlife can be found around the lake, but time is best spent here relaxing in one of the cozy lakeside houses. We end each one of our Nicaragua trips in a serene lodge right on the lake in Laguna de Apoyo and it's one of the best places we could imagine to get to experience a new place in Nica and maybe even have one more yoga session before the journey comes to an end! !

Endless Summer Roadtrip

It’s no secret that Costa Rica is a popular place to travel to and for good reason as its beauty is not exaggerated, and on our 10-day trip down the Pacific coast and up into the cloud forests you'll see it all firsthand! We road-trip through Costa Rica's famous Nicoya region, beginning in the north in Tamarindo to hit up some amazing surf breaks perfect for beginners and experts before heading south down the coast to the chill surf town of Santa Teresa. Our time on the coast will be spent surfing a ton, partying a ton, enjoying life on the beach and experiencing the 'Pura Vida' (good life) culture of the local Ticos! Finishing off the trip in the mountain town of Monteverde in Costa Rica's cloud forests gives you the chance to see a whole other side of the country's beauty. In the high elevation jungles, you'll see gorgeous views and an array of exotic wildlife including sloths, coatis, monkeys and a huge array of Disney-like tropical birds! The amazing sights and sounds of Costa Rica will follow you everywhere on this crazy fun road-trip and with tons of extra activities and stops along the way, there's an infinity of ways to enjoy this adventure!

Costa Rica
Playa Tamarindo

One of the greatest surf spots on the planet, Tamarindo draws a huge array of different crowds to its huge beach lined with several amazing surf breaks. Surfing is definitely not the only thing to do here, but you're crazy if you don't at least try to paddle into a few sets. The water is warm, the sand is soft and there are perfect waves for every level of surfer whether it's your first time or you're looking to get straight pitted! We also use Tamarindo as a jumping point to explore the incredible and much more quiet beaches surrounding the town. Playa Minas, Playa Grande, Playa Negra and Playa Avellanas are just a few of the amazing beaches found near Tamarindo and we'll have our pick for where to spend the day when we feel like getting out of town. Being such a popular surf spot, Tamarindo has also grown into an infamous party spot so when you feel like throwing down there is certainly no shortage of places and people to turn it up with!

Santa Teresa

The small, surfer town of Santa Teresa stretches across a long, gravel road that runs parallel to several kilometres of very, very good beach breaks for every level of surfer. The waves of Santa Teresa have been pulling in surfers since people began travelling to Costa Rica and it continues to be the town's most popular activity. There can be a ruckus nightlife scene the odd night in Santa Teresa, but the priority of every backpacker, shopkeeper and ex-pat who's settled here is always: surf, surf, surf. And our time here on our 10-day Costa Rica trip is no different, even if we may dip into the rum at night, it'll be worked out sweating on the beaches and paddling out into the waves, because the waves and beach here is just way too good to let yourself sleep away the day in your room. Remember, there's no better cure to a hangover than catching a good wave!

Monteverde

Up in the mountains of Costa Rica lies the cloud forests, lush jungles hiding an incredible world of waterfalls, exotic fauna and an array of strange and beautiful animals. One of the few gateways to this world is Monteverde, a cool mountain town teetering along the edges of the hills providing incredible views over the cloud forests and a relaxed place to spend your evenings after days of exploring the surrounding nature. Activities in Monteverde are fun and very plentiful, you can venture into the cloud forests via mountain bike, horseback, zip-line, rock climbing or on your own two feet. In town there are a variety of very cool places to check out, such as cheese, coffee and chocolate factories, reptile museums and many cafes and great restaurants. But the greatest joy in Monteverde is in just soaking in the natural environment by breathing in the air, walking through the forests, spotting one of the many cool animals and gawking at the incredible sight of Arenal Volcano in the distance.

We journey down to the Rastafarian town of Puerto Viejo in Costa Rica by rafting down the extravagant Rio Pacuare, named 1 of the 5 most beautiful rivers in the world by National Geographic! We then settle in the wonderland of Bocas del Toro in Panama to experience everything that the Caribbean has to offer. There's a very cool mixture of Latin and Creole culture present in this region and English-speaking locals give you a break from practicing your Spanish to joke about with the people here. There’s also some stellar diving and snorkeling in the unbelievably clear water, as well as very underrated waves for surfing on the picturesque Caribbean beaches. Costa Rica
Puerto Viejo

Puertio Viejo may be in Costa Rica, but it is definitely a Caribbean town first and a part of Costa Rica second as Afro-Caribbean culture dominates here. Reggae music and a nice smelling smoke comes out of virtually every door you'll pass as you cruise down this one-road town on a sweet cruiser bicycle. Adding to its Caribbean feel is several spectacular beaches, amazing food, wicked surfing and an overall chilled out attitude that could make even the most high strung individual relax and take life 'free and easy'. A pretty rowdy late night scene may keep you up late here enjoying the party, but come morning you'll want to spring right up and forget about being hungover to ensure you get a good look at the miles of pristine Caribbean beach surrounding this awesome town!

Caribbean Retreat
Panama
Bocas Del Toro

Bocas del Toro consists of six Caribbean islands just 32 km from the Costa Rican border in Panama, and between those six islands and the clear turquoise water that separates them there is a wonderland of beauty and activity to behold. Life in Bocas provides everything from stunning Caribbean white-sand beaches to wondrous snorkelling and diving opportunities through pristine reefs to awesome surfing on surreal Caribbean breaks to just hanging out on a yacht, casting out a fishing line out and sipping your drink. And the vibe in Bocas is very much Caribbean, with some delicious local cuisine and the overall laid-back Rasta vibe felt throughout the islands. Plus Panama's insanely cheap beer and rum has created in Bocas one of the wildest party scenes in Central America!

Epic Experiences you will have on this adventure

Whitewater Raft Down the Rio Pacuare

Traveling by river can be a fun way to travel and see the surrounding nature, and if that river happens to be very fast and rapid and you're flying down it on an inflatable raft then it's so fun that it's better than any ride you've ever been on at an amusement park! Whitewater rafting down a river is a thrilling activity, and when you do it in a tropical setting it's also warm, exotic and encompassed by beautiful and lush jungle vegetation and waterfalls pouring right into the river. The Rio Pacuare in Costa Rica is where we experience this thrill and it's an absolutely surreal setting, named 1 of the 5 most beautiful rivers in the world by National Geographic, rafting down this river will make you feel like you're flying right through the rapids of Jurassic Park!

Rappel Down a Waterfall

Most of us have seen a waterfall from the top and bottom, gazing up (or down) at its immense power and beauty. But being able to get right inside a waterfall and travel from the top all the way to the bottom will give you a whole new appreciation for them! You can do this by strapping on some climbing gear, taking the rope and easing yourself down the waterfall! A total dream experience for anyone who has been mesmerized by the dazzling sight of a waterfall. And in Monteverde, where we experience this thrilling activity, you get to rappel down not just 1, but 6 waterfalls! The longest one measuring over 110 feet! You'll be hearing the Indiana Jones theme song the entire time as you lean back and guide yourself down and around waterfall after waterfall!

Explore Machu Picchu

Perched high up in the Andes Mountains, surrounded by lush green peaks and misty clouds, sits the lost Incan city of Machu Picchu. One of the 7 Wonders of the World and the most renowned archaeological site in the western hemisphere it's incredible in every way. From its mysterious and elaborate temples to its out-of-this-world location, it's a sight that everyone should aim to see once in their lifetime. Our local Incan guide will take us on a spiritual journey up the mountain, stopping for Coca Leaf and thankfulness ceremonies along the way. This is one experience that will leave your soul rejuvenated. The town of Machu Picchu, in the Urubamaba Valley, exists solely as a base camp for people to view the magnificent ruins by day and have a nice place to catch their breath by night. Despite being a town built around tourism, there is a mystical feel to the town appropriate to its location and it boasts one of the best night-markets you'll find in Peru.

Go Scuba Diving

Diving is like no other experience on Earth. Life under the water is silent and peaceful, everything is flowing and moving in a way that we land creatures are unaccustomed to. Despite all of our high tech equipment, we are extremely out of our element in the water and it is a humbling experience to watch and observe what life is like under the sea. Fish come in all shapes, sizes and colours and move together in a harmonious unison through beautiful coral and twisted sunlight. On our trips, scuba diving is a huge activity as we travel to countries that offer some of the best diving in the world. The Caribbean in Central America possesses the second largest reef in the world, the warm waters of the South Pacific in Southeast Asia are home to the largest diversity of sea-life in the world and the seas of the Mediterranean are full of rich history and beauty. There is a whole universe under the ocean and experiencing what it's like to be in it is a must at least once in your life!

Rip through a Desert in a Dune Buggy

When you first think of deserts you may think of huge expanses of nothingness, flat and dry with nothing to do for fun. But in some deserts the wind has blown the sand into a wonderful terrain of mountains, valleys and wide-open plains that are a hell of a lot of fun to rip up and down on in a little vehicle designed for just that: a dune buggy. Surrounding the oasis town of Huacachina in Peru there is a vast playground of sand dunes, big and small, that we’ve discovered are best explored with a couple travel buddies in a dune buggy at break-neck speeds! Best of all, if you need to catch your breath you can slow it down and enjoy the incredible views of a gorgeous, coastal desert terrain that few have the chance to see in such a free and fun way!

Camping in the Peruvian Desert

What is the most epic end to a day of ripping around rollercoaster-style in giant dune buggies and sand boarding multiple peaks of the ever-changing dunes of Huacachina? Spending a night together with your FNEZ family camping right in the desert dunes. This experience comes complete with a Peruvian fire-grilled dinner and all-you-can-drink Pisco sours, catered to us by our favourite local guides! Lay back, look up at the twinkling stars and vast nighttime sky, and revel in the marvels of our world. It is a party and experience for the books, and not only will you wake up in awe that you just spent a night in your own private desert oasis, but you’ll get to witness one of the most epic sunrises of your life! So wipe away that hangover fog, breathe in the fresh air, and take in this once in a lifetime view.

Go Sandboarding

One of the best and most exciting feelings is just after you strap on your board and you're standing at the edge of a nice, big slope and about to slide your board that extra inch forward so you can start ripping down the mountain. The sun is shining and the sky is blue, you're wearing hardly any clothes and it's nice and hot out - wait, what!? Yes, for all you snowboarders out there that think it's limited to the winter, think again, as sandboarding down huge mountain dunes in the desert offers its own spin on the sport. And in the southern deserts of Peru, you can experience boarding in a whole new way when you climb up the massive sand dunes and gaze out across the beautiful desert hills and then tip your board over the edge and carve soft sand instead of snow in this exhilarating experience that is a must-do for every boarder, skier or lover of fun activities! And if you're not into boarding, try out a sand-toboggan…they’re actually faster!

Hike the Colca Canyon

Following the winding Colca River in southern Peru, the Colca Canyon is one of the deepest in the world. Its depth of 10,724 ft, or 3,270 m, makes it more than twice as deep as the Grand Canyon. And we get to hike it! After 6 kms of tight switchbacks finally bring you to the bottom, you’ll enjoy a nice lunch with all your travel buddies before heading another 16 kms across the canyon to our overnight lodgings. Here you will most likely jump into the pool fully clothed and exhausted while feeling immensely proud of yourself for having survived the hike into the canyon. Spend the night playing cards with your friends and trying not to nod off before hitting the hay at an early hour. If you’ve agreed to hike back out, you’ll be up at the crack of dawn for the 5 km trek straight back up the canyon. If your legs have given up on you from the previous day’s exertions, you can hire a mule to take you up. With amazing views the entire time and some wicked condor sightings, the Colca Canyon trek will push you mentally and physically beyond your comfort zone, but the feeling of accomplishment is phenomenal indeed.

Tickle your Taste Buds with a Chocolate Workshop

With cacao trees being native to the Americas, and Peru being home to one of the rarest cocan bean species around, a chocolate tour is definitely in order when visiting the country. Hit up an amazing chocolate workshop in Arequipa that will blow your chocolate senses. The owner Javier will walk you through some of the history of the cacao bean, talk about cocoa butter and its uses, have you sort and hand-grind some beans, and try a little Xocolatl (the drink of the Aztec kings). You are then shown the whole chocolate making process and even get to make your batch to take home, choosing from ingredients like coconut, goji berries, coca powder, salt and so forth to make your chocolate bonbons extra tasty. All the beans used in the shop are sourced from local producers and are certified Organic and Fair Trade. Afterwards, you can hang out in the café and have some of the most amazing hot chocolate around, or try some of the local craft beers on tap, or even buy some chocolate liquor or body scrubs to take home with you. This is every chocolate lover’s dream!!!

Paragliding in Lima

Have you always wanted to fly like a bird? Then head out for an awesome paragliding session in Lima! Right on the edge of the Miraflores district (where we stay) and on a set of beautiful cliffs overlooking the ocean, multiple Peruvian paragliding schools are available to take you out. Whether you take a one-day paragliding course or just fly tandem with a professional, there’s nothing like running off the cliff and feeling the wind grab the canopy as you soar away. From way up above Lima you’ll get an incredible ocean view, see how huge the city really is (10 million people!), and your instructor can point out beautiful sights and cool restaurants for you to check out later. This is definitely an amazing way to start or finish your trip to Peru!

Zip Lining

Experience the rush of adrenaline as you step off the platform, the wind in your face as you begin to speed up, leafy branches whipping by until you burst into a sweeping view of the surrounding landscape…feel like you’re flying yet? This is zip lining! It takes you to previously inaccessible parts of the country, from lush rainforests to tangled jungles. As you soar through and above the canopy, you get a bird’s eye view of everything around you for miles. While being up high in the sky isn’t for the faint of heart, zip lining takes you to a whole new world where you can sit back, relax, and zip along enjoying panoramas you probably couldn’t find anywhere else. It’s no surprise that when you come upon a group of zip liners there’s nothing but smiles and whoops of excitement as they travel from tree to tree and on to new adventures.

Revolution Tour Through Downtown Colonial Leon

León is not just the cultural and architectural capital of Nicaragua but was also home to the Nicaraguan Revolution in the not so distant past. The Sandinista’s ousted the country’s dictatorship in the late 1970s thanks to the courage and ambition of the local people of León. Learn about the incredible history of the nation on a guided walking tour of the former capital of Nicaragua and it’s beautiful Spanish colonial architecture, dating back to the 1500’s. Don’t forget to take a selfie from atop the Catedral de la Asunción de María, the largest cathedral in Central America!

Experience Authentic Caribbean Culture

It is hard to get more Caribbean than the Corn Islands. The laid back style of the locals and the islands’ sunny vibes will win you over as soon as you fly into this tropical paradise! Your trip leaders will help you fully embrace the island lifestyle by teaming up with our local Corn Island friends for some truly authentic Caribbean cultural experiences. Whether it is trying the local seafood special of Rondon, playing a backyard baseball game with the Corn Island kids (they LOVE baseball here), or dancing to dancehall and reggaeton all night, you will be saying Jus’ chillin mon’ like a true local in no time!

Swim In the Lake of a Volcano Crater

Nicaragua is a country full of incredible hidden backpacker spots and Laguna de Apoyo is one you don’t want to miss. This 23,000+ year-old dormant volcano has, over time, filled up with rainwater. This has resulted in what could be one of nature’s coolest ‘swimming pools’! Not only do we spend two nights along the volcano’s rim–but you will get to relax and swim in the pristine waters of its giant crater lake! Kayaks and standup paddle boards are included as well, so you can go on your very own adventures around the crater. Volcanic paradise at its finest! (For people doing our 'Final Fiesta' New Years trip, this is only available for extension trips)

Hike a Volcano and Ride Down It

In Northern Nicaragua, just outside the city of León, there is an active volcano called Cerro Negro (literally Black Hill) that is one of a kind. Cerro Negro is affectionately named because of the fine black ash created from its eruptions that covers one side of the volcano, and because of this ash people can do something extremely unique on Cerro Negro. On our 10-day Nicaragua trips we take a day trip out to Cerro Negro, hike up it, admire the view, enjoy a drink or two, and then rip down the side of the volcano on a modified sandboard! - or you can plop yourself down on a makeshift toboggan and fly down that way, too! This is the only place in the world you can do this and we highly suggest you give it a try because it's as badass as it sounds.

Adventure Sports in The Sacred Valley

The Sacred Valley of the Incas, also known as the Urubamba Valley, encompasses the heartland of what was once the Inca Empire. Dotted with everything from rocky hills and mountains, to lush grass-covered terraces, it makes a beautiful backdrop for an adrenaline packed day of adventure sports! With both mountain biking and white water rafting available as very affordable options, you’ll want to grab this chance to see the Sacred Valley from a whole new perspective. Spend 3 hours paddling down a winding river with a seasoned guide leading you through epic rapids. You will even have the chance to float alongside the boat for certain stretches or jump off large boulders into the water. Or, you could grab your mountain bike and peddle off for a day of adventures. Cycle through the picturesque valley and feel yourself be transported back to an ancient time. You’ll be physically and mentally challenged, and will come out at the end of the day with a big smile and no regrets!

Go Bungee Jumping

Bungee Jumping is one of those activities we all imagine we'll do once in our lives, but it's usually when people are travelling that they do it for the first time. Maybe it's because they don't give themselves the time at home or maybe it's because people feel a little more courageous away from home or maybe it's just a matter of: if not now, then when? Either way, bungee jumping is always a favourite activity on our trips and many people are encouraged to give it a try and why not? It's exciting! You're standing at the edge, staring out into the distance and feeling the fear build up inside you and then you finally leap off the edge and get a huge adrenaline rush as you fly straight down! It's quite a mental trip when you see the earth approaching so fast and your brain is telling you that you're about to die, but then you stop and go flying back up into the air as if you've just been reborn! If you've even got a slight urge to try it out then take the leap, you won't regret it!

Surf a Wave

Nothing compares to the feeling you get the first time you paddle into a wave, stand up as it breaks and ride the face of it – this is the incomparable feeling of surfing. When you get it right, you'll know, because you'll be more excited than the first time you had sex and probably more addicted to it, too! Surfing is arguably the most challenging sport in the world and requires you to learn much more than physical coordination. In order to surf a wave, you'll need patience, discipline, a lack of fear and an insatiable urge to have fun. It's no coincidence that 7 of the countries that we run trips to (Indonesia, the Philippines, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Peru & South Africa) have wicked surf scenes, because there's nothing quite like it. *** PLEASE NOTE surfing is dependent on the right conditions and not always possible

Soak It Up at a Hot Spring

After finishing your Colca Canyon trek in the morning, the likelihood that your legs will be stiff as boards is rather high. So what better way to relax those muscles and give yourself a pat on the back for a hike well done than to soak in some luxurious Peruvian hot springs? Pop into your bikini or boardies, grab a beer, and soak up the warmth in a set of terraced stone pools located at the bottom of a river valley. With 5 different tiered pools containing water of varying temperatures, there’s something for everyone. So sit back, relax, and revel in the fact that you’re in Peru with an amazing group of people having the time of your life - and that the hike is over!

Extreme Activities in the Sacred Valley

No trip is complete without a day of adrenaline pumping action, and that’s exactly what you get on our day out in the Sacred Valley! If you really want to get out of your comfort zone, bungee jumping will be right up your alley. Considered the highest bungee jump in South America, you will get to experience a free fall from a platform set 122 meters (just over 400 ft) above the Sacred Valley. Not only will you get an epic view from above, but your adrenaline will be spiking extra hard! Want to make it extra exciting? You could soar over 100 meters high with the highest slingshot bungee in the world! If you’ve always wanted to be Superman, this is your chance. Need to calm your nerves after all this excitement? A little paintball should do the trick. With a variety of obstacles and structures to hunker down in, and probably some live sheep thrown into the mix as well, throw on your animal onesie, grab your paintball gun, and have an amazing time with your friends (animal onesie not included). This will be a day you won't forget!

Pisco Tasting Tour

Pisco. While you may have never heard of this magical liquid, it is the national liquor of Peru! A grape brandy that is most commonly found in the country’s national drink, the Pisco Sour, on this trip you will be lucky enough to get a pisco tasting tour! You will visit a small vineyard outside of Ica, be walked through the whole distillation process from start to finish, and then be led to the tasting room where you will sip a variety of pisco wines and liqueurs. And while many a morning will be spent wishing you had imbibed one (or three) less piscos the night before (a hangover at high altitude is no joke!), pisco will undoubtedly be part of some of your fondest memories from your time in Peru. Don’t forget to take a bottle home with you to continue the good times!

Fly Under Water

Ever wonder what it would be like to be able to swim under water like a dolphin or a shark, moving at high speed, gliding up and down and moving with ease and being able to see all the splendour of life in the sea? Well, you can! It's being called Coral Surfing and it's a wicked new experience being offered that seems to have been pulled right from a video game or some kind of virtual simulator, but it's real and it's unbelievably cool and fun! You hold onto a set of carbon fins that is pulled by a boat, the fins act as wings under the water and allow you to dive up and down with speed simply by tilting your wrist. You can even use the wings interchangeably to perform spins! The whole experience is beyond surreal and to add to it all you're flying through the clear, turquoise water over pristine coral and lush reefs that provide constant visual wonder.

Catch a Fish and Eat It, Too

We get so many people who come on our trips that say they don't like seafood and won't eat it - usually, they're not from a coastal town. So when we serve up a fresh barracuda or tuna or some other tasty fish that the fisherman caught that morning and we convince them to give it a try, the first thing they say (with a satisfied smile) is that this doesn't taste like the seafood they've tried. There's just no getting around it, fish is meant to be eaten fresh! And the only thing tastier than a fresh fish is one that you caught, too! Catching the fish that you eat used to be a part of life and still is in many parts of the world, however, more and more people are buying from the commercial fishing industry which is unsustainable and is destroying the ocean's eco-system. We offer the option to go fishing on nearly all of our trips with friendly, local fisherman that show you their tricks - it's an experience that not only teaches you the importance of fishing but is also a hell of a good time: on a boat, with friends, with beer, in the sun, drifting down a tropical coastline… 'nuff said!

Tour the ‘Backpacker’s Galapagos' Ballestas Islands

Hop on a boat and cruise out an hour or so into the Pacific Ocean off of Peru's southern coast to a group of small islands called the Ballestas Islands, an amazing sanctuary for a colourful variety of incredible animals. First, be greeted by the barks and howls of the thousands of sea lions that sound like a wolf-pack surrounding you on every side. The playful sea lions are a curious bunch and will often approach the boats looking for new playmates, but the spectacle of creatures only gets more exciting as there is a large density of penguins and the infamous blue-footed booby, a hilarious bird with bright blue feet. Often called the 'Mini Galapagos' because of the extraordinary display of wildlife, you'll have the chance to view over 1,500 different species of species when making the unforgettable trip out to the Ballestas Islands!

Practice Yoga on the Beach

Practicing yoga on the beach in warm, tropical weather provides you with the perfect environment to learn how to find a calm within yourself and feel your mind truly relax. Listening to the sounds of the jungle and the crashing of the waves on shore only adds to the bliss of this experience. You can experience practicing yoga in a beautiful and isolated setting under the expert guidance of yoga instructors on several of our our trips. So take an hour or so out of your day to stretch, breathe and enjoy one of the best yoga sessions of your life in paradise!

Bathe Under a Waterfall

When leaving home and hitting the road with your backpack, one thought you may have in mind is that you're not going to have another good shower for awhile. In most parts of the world water pressure is lower, there is often no hot water and you just can't seem to scrub off that distinct backpacker odour. However, there is one place where hundreds of gallons of refreshing fresh water can pour all over you in a surreal bathing experience and that spot is found at the bottom of a waterfall. When hiking around jungles, one of our favourite things to search out is a good tropical waterfall where you can swim, relax, and get right under it and let the huge torrent of water pour all over you and wash you clean! But the best part is often the simple sight of the waterfall itself, because for whatever reason there are few things in the world we find more captivating to watch than water dropping from great heights. Maybe it's because nothing falls with the grace of water, but either way it's an amazing feeling to come upon a gorgeous waterfall in the jungle and head straight into its downpour for the best shower of your life!

Walk on a Rainbow

Live a real life Mario Kart dream on your very own Rainbow Road! Rainbow Mountain, also known as Vinicunca, is a ridiculously beautiful section of the Andes. It’s one of those hidden gems that few backpackers make it out to, and we couldn’t be more excited to offer it as an optional day trip on our FnEZ Peru trips! Imagine glacial mountain streams that form a tapestry as they weave their way through lush green fields and pastures home to thousands of grazing alpacas, tiny villages consisting of mud brick houses and locals in traditional outfits (along with the cutest wide-eyed children waiting to give you a high five), and finally, at the peak, an incredible mountain range lit up with spectrum of purples, greens, blues, yellows and reds. Don’t just take our word for it, though; this is something you NEED to experience for yourself. Once you get to the peak and your jaw hits the ground (erm…rainbow?), you’ll understand why we just keep going back. * * * NOTE: The optional Rainbow Mountain hike is our highest elevated hike. Because of the high altitude we only recommend this hike for the physically fit. * * *

It's no coincidence that 6 of the countries that we run trips to (Indonesia, the Philippines, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Peru & Colombia) have wicked surf scenes, because there's nothing quite like it.

Stand Up Paddling in Santa Teresa

Let’s be honest, after all the partying you’ll most likely be doing down here in Central America, you might feel the need for a little workout (or not, but let’s be optimistic). So why not try one of the most popular new sports in the Americas–Stand Up Paddling (SUP). Down in the small, surfer town of Santa Teresa you can find several kilometres of gleaming sands, crystal-clear waters and wicked beach breaks for every level of surfer…and that makes it ideal for SUP-ing as well! You don’t want to be sleeping the day away in this paradise. Time to get out in the sun and waves, and get a full body workout on your paddleboard. And hey, if you need a little break you can just stretch out and catch some rays on your board before picking that paddle back up. Not only that, but rental includes a coupla’ bevvies (we can’t say no to free booze) and even a photographer so you have some wicked pics of your ocean adventure!

Go Snorkelling

Snorkelling is a great alternative for those looking to save a little money on diving costs or those who can’t dive for medical reasons. Floating along the surface of the water at any one of our incredible destinations around the world will give you a peak into a magical underwater world. More confident snorkelers can even dive down to get a closer look at the fauna and flora found in our oceans. From glittering fish, to colourful anemone, and super cool sharks (don’t worry, the non-carnivorous ones), snorkelling is a wonderful experience for the non-diver. So snap on a mask and grab your flippers (and DON’T inhale while diving) and you’ll be all set for a little adventure under the sea.

Rock Climb Peru

Most of us have tried rock climbing, but it's usually been in a sweaty gym with an artificial climbing wall that is trying to mimic the outdoor experience of rock climbing. When you climb a natural cliff face, your body seems to know it and you almost feel like you're tapping into a core part of your humanity that is telling you that somehow, someway you have to scale this cliff - and most people surprise themselves with their ability to do it. One of the best parts of outdoor rock climbing is that it's generally done in some of the most surreal places on this planet so when you get to the top of your climb you're rewarded with a breathtaking view. So get your climb on in Peru!

Sail through the Caribbean

The Caribbean Sea is famed for its calm, tropical waters and its thousands of pristine islands that have come to be known as the picture of paradise. And the best way to explore this beautiful sea and its many islands is by gliding along it smoothly and calmly on a sailboat. You can pretty much take your pick for where to begin and where to drop anchor when sailing though the Caribbean but our chosen spot for this experience is Bocas del Toro in Panama, an archipelago made up of several islands that provide plenty of beauty to be explored in and around each one. Loading up on a sailboat with your group, a fully stocked cooler, snorkel gear, fishing rods and any other necessary supplies is one of, if not the best way to spend your days here and we definitely do plenty of sailing when we are in Bocas del Toro.

Cooking class in Cusco

After getting a taste of some of the local delicacies Peru has to offer, you’ll be itching to get in the kitchen and learn how to make some of these dishes on your own! In the culturally rich city of Cusco, we have the opportunity to throw on some colorful aprons and get to cooking alongside our very own Peruvian chef. With step by step instructions on how to prepare a popular drink and delicious main dish, we leave the class ready to show all our family and friends back home the tasty treats Peru has to offer! The chef instructing the class also gives some background to the drinks and dishes history and relevance in Peruvian culture. First up, the class chooses whether to prepare a Pisco Sour, the Peruvian national cocktail, or Chicha Morada, a non-alcoholic drink originally from the Andes of Peru. The main course options are between two traditional and equally delicious dishes, Aji de Gallina or Lomo Saltado. The kitchen is also able to make recipe modifications based on food restrictions or allergies the group may have. In typical Free & Easy fashion, we make sure the cooking class is not only informative but super fun!

Yoga in Pisac

Wind down after some invigorating hikes and enjoy a tranquil yoga class in the beautiful Sacred Valley of the Incas just outside of Cusco, also known as the Urubamba Valley. The quaint town of Pisac is surrounded by Incan Ruins and nestled along the same river that flows to Machu Picchu town known as the Urubamba River. Guided by an experienced and trained yoga teacher, we move through restorative poses and meditative postures to stretch out those sore legs post-Colca Canyon trek. Palo Santo and gentle music fill the room to create a serene environment for quieting the mind as we connect deeper within ourselves. The energy from the ancient ruins that lay in Peru is known to be felt by locals and tourists alike. Through this mindful yoga practice, we get the chance to receive the powerful energy that lies in the Sacred Valley. Leave this class feeling relaxed and rejuvenated, with an improved balance between body and mind.

Caribbean Bicycle Parade

What better way to beach-hop than cruising with 20 of your new best friends on a retro bicycle along the Caribbean coast? Tasty Tuesday Fiesta at Tasty Waves Cantina!

it’s the most notorious party in the Caribbean, and Free and Easy Traveler has been teaming up with Tasty Waves Cantina since its inception! Complete with a massive bonfire, street food, Free and Easy drink discounts and the best surprise to ring in midnight…it’s the best party in Puerto Viejo! If we can't make the Tasty Tuesday Fiesta we replace it with the epic Saturday Karaoke party.

Beach Cleanup

Our Trash Hero beach cleanups are a great way to do good, feel good, and get some beach all at the same time. With thousands of tons of trash swirling around the oceans, the unfortunate reality is that some of it washes up onto the beautiful beaches we fall in love with around the world. So we thought ‘Let’s do something about this!’ Our partnership with Trash Hero began in Koh Lipe, Thailand, where they regularly organized beach cleanup days. Today, Trash Hero has gone viral and can be found operating in Thailand and Indonesia, and is spreading into dozens more countries at a rapid pace. On our end, beach cleanup day quickly became one of the most fun and rewarding days on our Thailand trip. So we decided to spread the love, and have instituted a beach cleanup day into our regular itineraries across the world. Through our sponsorship and partnership with Trash Hero, our travellers and others like them have since collected tens of thousands of kilograms of trash from the beaches we travel to…and really, there’s nothing more epic than saving the world! ** We will always strive to make a beach cleanup happen, but sometimes we may not be able to make it happen **
