Lagos to Lisbon

In our opinion, Portugal is one of the most underrated countries in Mediterranean. More popular destinations like Spain and Greece draw most of the sun-loving tourists, but Portugal is where you can really get off the beaten track and discover beautiful backpacker gems. We’ll start our 10 day trip in Seville, Spain of all places. One night of Spanish partying and then we’ll be off to start our Portugese adventure in the beach town of Lagos. Portugal has over 800km of pristine coastline, and Lagos is one of the best backpacker destinations around. Imagine dancing the night away in one of the many bars, waking up to beautiful white sand beaches and then heading off for a day of epic surfing. Now that’s what we’re talking about! From there we’ll hop over a village that overlooks some of the Algarve coast’s most dramatic scenery: Sagres! With its soaring cliffs and ancient fortresses sitting high above the ocean waves, you’ll feel like you’ve just stepped up to the edge of the world. With its laid-back vibe, vibrant nightlife and wicked surf, it’s the perfect place to live free. Last but not least, we will find ourselves in the Portugese capital of Lisbon. A postcard-perfect blend of cobbled streets, ancient ruins and beautifully crafted cathedrals; you will quickly fall in love with this city. The absence of open-container laws and cheap alcohol also means that a night on the town in Bairro Alto will introduce you to one of the most raucous party areas in all of Europe. Portugal has so much to offer, so strap on your backpack and book that ticket. The Mediterranean is calling!

Seville.

Situated on the plain of the River Guadalquivir, which runs through the middle of the city and is bridged by lovely stone bridges, Seville is the largest city in Andalusia and contains not one, but THREE UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Many of it’s winding streets are lined with Bitter Seville orange trees that perfume the air as you stroll from one bar to another, tasting the delicious locals tapas on offer. Probably the most famous of Seville’s heritage sites is the Alcázar. Taking over 500 years to build, and a mix of Mudéjar and Renaissance styles, it was used to shoot many Game of Thrones episodes. Seville is the perfect place to end your perfect 10 days in Spain!

Lagos

One of the most popular cities of the Algarve region, and in Portugal as whole, Lagos will seriously take your breath away. Famed for its Ponta de Piedade shoreline, along this coast you will find some of the most magical beaches you’ve ever seen. Think weathered sandstone cliffs carved by nature into pillars, tunnels and hidden grottos, kissing crystal clear green and turquoise waters and an ultra blue sky. We know…it’s mind blowing. The town itself is renowned for its bars, restaurants and vibrant summer nightlife. Lying along the bank of the Rio Bensafrim, the old town’s pretty cobblestone streets and picture-perfect piazzas and churches are encircled by 16th century walls. From fabulous beaches, to lively parties and a ton of activities, you won’t leave Lagos disappointed.

Wander through town and grab a coffee at one of its cheery cafes or a glass of Vinho Verde at a local restaurant. Looking for a little excitement? Athens

Athens is one of the world's oldest cities, with its recorded history spanning around 3400 years! Classical Athens was a powerful city-state, a centre for the arts, learning and philosophy, home of Plato's Academy and Aristotle's Lyceum, and the birthplace of democracy and modern thought. History is engrained in everything you see and feel when walking around Athens. Experiencing this amazing city to begin our trip is made all the better by the passionate Greek people and their incredible cuisine!

Beaches Beyond Beautiful

Santorini

The island of Santorini used to be a massive volcano until it erupted in one of the largest tectonic events in history. Eventually most of the volcano sunk into the sea leaving only the eastern rim as a half moon crescent-shaped relic of the ancient volcano. The east coast of the island gently slopes into the sea and the west coast is entirely made up of dramatic cliffs dotted with little towns clinging to the side. Shimmering volcanic black sand beaches around the island add to its beauty and offer great places to relax during the day. But simply exploring this incredible island, visiting the beautiful towns and finding a nice place to enjoy arguably the best sunset in the world is what makes Santorini so memorable!

Beaches Beyond Beautiful
Greece
Ios

Ios is a beautiful bohemian island plopped right in the deep blue of the Mediterranean with a cool alternative culture and deep history. In the 1960s Ios became a new waypoint for hippies from all around the world and this is part of the reason why it’s still considered to be the original party island in Greece, and it certainly lives up to its reputation! Today Ios is a stellar mix of day time chilling and night time partying, as exploring the island by bike or ATV or partaking in the various wicked water sports is just as fun as dancing the night away at one of the many chic bars or going to see a concert at the Odysseas Elytis Theatre where there are often festivals going on. So no matter what you're into, Ios is a place to have fun and lots of it!

Crete

One of the largest islands in the Mediterranean (Greece's largest), Crete is filled with a fascinating and beautiful history. From Europe's first palace, the Minoan ruins of Knosses, to the seaside Venetian fortresses of Rethymo, to the legendary birthplace of Zeus, to stunning old mosques and Byzantine monasteries. Besides its man-made wonders, Crete boasts a natural beauty of palm tree forests and soaring mountain ranges that cut along the coast and drop down into monumental gorges that reach right out to the sea. When we visit Crete on our trip, we spend an entire day exploring the unforgettable sights on the island before retiring to the lazy beach town of Plakias that is strategically situated along a very long beach and near the hiking trails that lead through the mountains to ancient monasteries. The epic-ness of Crete has been fabled for all of history and continues to be an almost mythical destination to experience!

Epic Experiences you will have on this adventure

Tour the Sagrada Familia

The Sagrada Familia is perhaps Barcelona’s most recognizable monument. A large Roman Catholic Church designed by famed Spanish architect Antoni Gaudí, it has been under construction since 1882. Although currently still incomplete, it is nonetheless a UNESCO World Heritage Sight. The incredible detail found in the church along with its avant-garde design combining Gothic and curvilinear Art Nouveau forms makes it a must-see while in Spain. Sagrada Familia’s construction has been very slow, relying on private donations and interrupted by the Spanish Civil War. It’s been 134 years in the making, but we will need to wait a little bit longer for it to be complete. The church’s anticipated completion date is 2026, marking the 100th anniversary of Gaudí’s death. Free & Easy is stoked to include a guided tour of this architectural masterpiece in our trip to Spain!

Go Scuba Diving

Diving is like no other experience on Earth. Life under the water is silent and peaceful, everything is flowing and moving in a way that we land creatures are unaccustomed to. Despite all of our high tech equipment, we are extremely out of our element in the water and it is a humbling experience to watch and observe what life is like under the sea. Fish come in all shapes, sizes and colours and move together in a harmonious unison through beautiful coral and twisted sunlight. On our trips, scuba diving is a huge activity as we travel to countries that offer some of the best diving in the world. The Caribbean in Central America possesses the second largest reef in the world, the warm waters of the South Pacific in Southeast Asia are home to the largest diversity of sea-life in the world and the seas of the Mediterranean are full of rich history and beauty. There is a whole universe under the ocean and experiencing what’s it like to be in it is a must at least once in your life!

Party in Ios

Ios is the original Greek party island and offers up some up the best parties in the Mediterranean while still maintaining the laid back lifestyle we're all looking for when we chase paradise. Due to its lack of an airport, Ios has remained somewhat overlooked and less popular than some of its island neighbours but that has allowed it to retain a typically Greek feel to it and avoid it turning into a complete gong show. There are a number of gorgeous beaches that you can laze around on and play an array of wicked water sports to chase your hangover away - or if you still haven't gone to bed yet, just another fun place to party! But young or old, everyone goes out for a night of partying in Ios, it's what life on the island revolves around and, to be honest, it's just way too much damn fun to miss out on! It's something every traveler should experience at least once.

See a Santorini Sunset

The sun sets all over the world, obviously, but in some places it just puts on a nicer display than others and Santorini, Greece is said to have the nicest sunsets in the world. The towns and villages of Santorini provide a Mecca of classic beauty for photographers and the village of Oia, in particular, offers perhaps the most stunning location to view the famous ethereal sunset of Santorini that never seems to disappoint each evening it repeats the beautiful display.

Pirate Boat Volcano Trip around Santorini

One of the coolest activities available on our 20-day Greece trip is hiking a volcano! The volcano itself is still active and its last eruption wasn’t long ago, in 1950. But not only do we hike it…we spend the whole day on a pirate boat with other like-minded travelers stopping at a few other islands while getting there and back! Enjoying the magnificent beauty of the Santorini Caldera along the way and enjoying some morning wine doesn’t hurt either. We hop on the boat in the late morning, head straight to the volcano where we face the heat and the incredibly unique volcanic surface. After the hike, we cruise over to some warm springs and cover ourselves in mud! Sound weird? It is. The mud is said to have healing properties for your skin and body. Once we rinse off and we’re looking rejuvenated, we cruise over to Thirassia for a cheap lunch and another optional hike up some switchback stairs for a unique view of Santorini, followed by a wonderful boat ride back, bringing us home just in time to get ready for the amazing clubs Santorini has to offer. This is one of those Epic Experiences you'll want to splurge on!

Road Trip in Rhodes

Who doesn’t love a good road trip? We hop on a coach bus with a local driver to take us from one end of Rhodes to the other. From the Old City, down to Prasonisi Beach, with two other beach stops in between, it’s a day full of sun, fun and window watching. It’s the perfect way to see the entire island in one day, in the relaxed and fun Free & Easy fashion. We play some frisbee, drink some beers (before they get too hot!), watch windsurfers, soak in the rays and do whatever the hell we want! On the way back we stop for an unbelievable—and uncrowded—view of the sunset overlooking an old church while locals sell homemade honey, liqueurs and other delights, great for souvenirs or snacks for the bus ride back. Join us in Greece to enjoy this one of a kind experience that we’ve been perfecting for years - it's one you’ll find nowhere else!

Walking Tour of Athens, The Acropolis & The Parthenon

Walking about Athens is a trip in and of itself—the cradle of Western civilization and the birthplace of democracy with a history spanning more than 3,400 years, it is one of the most storied cities we've ever known. And classical Greece is still very much alive in Athens with historical monuments, works of art and ancient roads visible throughout the city. Sitting above it all is The Acropolis, an ancient citadel located on a high rocky outcrop above the city and containing the remains of several ancient buildings of great architectural and historic significance, such as the Propylaia, the Erechtheion and the Temple of Athena Nike. But there is one building that is the most famous of all and beautifully portrays the essence of ancient Greece: the Parthenon. A massive, marble white temple dedicated to the goddess Athena, the Parthenon was completed in 438 B.C.E. and is one of the most important surviving structures in western civilization. Regarded as an enduring symbol of Athenian democracy, the Parthenon is not just a wondrous sight to behold but also one of the world's greatest cultural monuments and will no doubt be one of the most unforgettable man-made structures you'll ever see!

Hiking up to Ancient Thira

Perissa Beach is one of our favourite places in Santorini; it's also where we happen to stay when we're on the island. When you get there, don't be surprised if you see a random white church built into the middle of a cliff...just walk towards it. Why, you may ask? Well why the heck not, let’s go on an adventure! What you will find is a footpath. It will lead you up to the old church, and then beyond that to the Ancient City of Thira. Now this is no stroll on the beach; expect a 45-90 minute hike, depending on your fitness level, that will take you 360 meters above the shoreline! The entry once you get to the top is 2 euros (not included). The city itself is mostly ruins dating back to 300 B.C.E. It sits on a ridge atop Messavouno Mountain, and is named after the mythical ruler of Santorini Island, Theras. The city itself was inhabited up until 726 C.E. and went through multiple excavations in the 20th century. If you’re willing to push through the difficult parts of the hike, you will be rewarded ten-fold with incredible views of the island, so sit back, feel the burn, and enjoy the view knowing you worked so hard to get it!

Boat Trip to Palm Beach in Preveli Gorge

Grab a mug of sangria and climb aboard our private boat! A great trip around the coast of Crete from Plakias Beach to Palm Beach will awaken the pirate within you. At Palm Beach we will explore the unique micro-ecosystem that exists courtesy of no wind and a tropical atmosphere, and we can spend a few hours throwing a frisbee, drinking sangria, and hiking deep into the gorge and its giant, prehistoric-seeming rocks. Exploring the quiet beach with all of your friends by your side is the FnEZ way! You won't want to miss this adventure to the palm trees, white sand and beach bar. Plus, knowing that our boat is sailing the same seas pirates sailed thousands of years ago, passing their booty caves and old keeps will ignite your imagination as we sail another Mediterranean day away in Crete.

River Hike in Plakias

Looking for a reason to hike? How about just because? This river hike in Plakias is challenging, but worth it. Not for beginner hikers, this will be sure to excite any avid trekkers’ need for adventure. Water shoes or waterproof hiking shoes are recommended, as well as a clear head. Maybe not the best one to try hungover or if you’ve been drinking all day. Besides, you’ll need both hands to navigate this one! A two-and-a-half hour hike takes us through the Cretan countryside, in and out of the hot sun, to an opening by the river. We hop right in and follow it up for about 2 kilometres over huge boulders, all under the shady canopy of the river trees. The hike climaxes at a small river pool with a picturesque bridge overlooking it. We cool down with a swim in this seeming fairy wonderland then head back the way we came, emerging from the river into the hot sun to warm ourselves and dry our shoes. While drinking is not recommended ON this hike, it most certainly is recommended AFTER! Beer always tastes better when you’ve earned it, and after this hike, you will! Grab a Mythos, sit by the sea and cheers your comrades on a day well spent!

Pirate Booty Hike in Plakias

Behold! Pirate Booty! We’ll grab a refreshment as we walk along the beach towards the start of this hike. It takes us across the amazing cliffsides of Plakias Beach, skyrocketing above us and below. But as dangerous as that might sound, it’s a hike for all skill levels. Overlooking the bay we’ll make our way to a couple of man made caves created by the Germans during the Occupation. Moving through them, we come across a huge ancient hold where, rumour has it, pirates used to hide their booty! You can see an old wall that has fallen away and why it would have been the perfect hiding spot! Then we’ll head back the way we came, but take a hard right into the Cretan countryside, through fields, dirt roads and hiking paths all while sipping on a cool beverage until we get to the Damnoni beach for a swim, lunch at one of the restaurants (not included), and some well deserved refreshments! Keeping it Free & Easy, we’ll stay as long as we like, do what we like, and enjoy the most classic pirate booty of all: a cold drink.

ATV Roadtrip in Santorini

What better way to see the sights of beautiful Santorini than on an ATV ride through the countryside? There is more to this stunning island than the postcard sunset view, so grab a friend, hop on your ATV (only if you feel comfortable using one of course!) and head straight into an island adventure! Fly solo on your own little day away from the group, or let one of your amazing leaders take you on a joy ride you’ll never forget. From the lighthouse, to the ancient Akrotiri ruins, viewpoints of the Caldera, hidden taverna gems for great eats, volcanic beaches, Fira’s shopping district, or Oia’s white buildings, this choose-your-own-adventure kind of day is as flexible as it is fun. There is nothing like the feeling of the open road and no better place than Santorini to explore it with your Free and Easy Family! Too busy to get around to this in Santorini? You can always rent one in Ios instead. A whole different experience on a whole different Island! Whatever you choose, you'll never forget that feeling of being in control of your own adventure.

Splash Around in a Waterpark

Ready to head back in time to your childhood, splash around like a six year old, never stop smiling, and have a really, really, REALLY good time? The Water Park in Faliraki just outside of Rhodes Town is the place for you! It’s got adventure and fun around every corner. First we take a quick walk from our hotel to the bus stop for a free shuttle straight to the water park. As soon as you enter, you’ll know why we love it so much. The first thing you see is triplet slides that are as insane as they look. After that there’s carpet races, half-pipes on tubes, twin twister slides, an epic space bowl and that’s all before we break for lunch. With a lazy river, wave pool, two pitch black slides, a crazy extra wide slide, and one cement mixer this park will awaken your inner child from start to finish! Plus there's a restaurant, snack bar, locker rooms, and lounge chairs if you get tired of all the running around and just want to soak up some sun. Let OUR inner child meet YOUR inner child and let's go outside and play!

Waterfall Snorkel Trip

Start your day in Plakias right by hopping on a bus and heading to the top of Kourtaliotiko Gorge. From there you’ll hike down the stairs with your snorkel gear, hop into the refreshingly cold water and then head off to find a waterfall! An epic adventure that includes hawk sightings, crazy cool eels, a waterfall made of fresh glacier spring water that you can drink as you swim, a fruit lunch, all of your friends alongside you, and a photographer to capture it all! After you’re done absorbing the beauty of the Gorge, head back up the ancient steps, hop on the bus for one more stop and be prepared for the bonus of getting to watch a skilled potter give a demonstration of his life’s work. With no pressure to buy anything, watch as he closes his eyes and creates beautiful pieces of art just by touch. Plus, taking a look around his not-so-traditional shop is quite the adventure, with surprise creations around every corner. And this was just the morning! After all that exploring, discovering, and adventuring it’s time to head back to Plakias for an afternoon of doing whatever you want. #LiveFree and Easy!

Try Water Sports in Ios

In Ios we stay on the beautifully idyllic Mylopotas beach, complete with soft sand and cool Mediterranean waters lapping the shoreline. Want to explore more than just the sand and beach chairs? The water sports are unlimited here! To begin with, for any divers, or anyone who has always wanted to try diving, this is the place for it in Greece! Some dives start by simply walking straight off the beach into the deep blue water while others have you diving off a boat to explore a super cool shipwreck. Whichever it is, this island will keep you mermaiding around underwater all day. Or, if you’re not a diver, you can jump on the boat and do some snorkeling instead! Of course there’s also paddle-boarding, tubing behind a boat, kayaking and even paddle-boating if you’re ready for a fun trip around the bay! These awesome activities allow you to really get out there and enjoy a different perspective of this beautiful island that we love so much.

A Taste of Tapas

You can’t visit Spain without diving into the culinary delight that are Tapas. Because dinner in Spain is usually served between 9 and 11 p.m., and sometimes even later, tapas arose as a cultural necessity…people were getting downright hangry between the end of work and the serving of dinner. Small bite-sized appetizers or snacks, tapas can range from cold dishes likes mixed olives or cheese or different types of pickled foods, to hot bites like battered squid or meatballs with different sauces. No matter what you try, this is going to be a set of snacks that you will never forget. There is a reason Spain is famous for its cuisine. They can turn the most basic of food items into one of the most delicious culinary experiences of your life. The serving of tapas is meant to encourage conversation, since people aren’t focused on eating a huge meal; some tapas bars are even designed with little to no seating, so that patrons stand mingle while consuming their tapas (with a drink in hand of course). So grab your TFFs and head to that tapas bar you noticed tucked away in a little alley. #NoRegrets

Surf an Atlantic Wave

Nothing compares to the feeling you get the first time you paddle into a wave, stand up as it breaks and ride the face of it – this is the incomparable feeling of surfing. When you get it right, you'll know, because you'll be more excited than the first time you had sex and probably more addicted to it, too! Surfing is arguably the most challenging sport in the world and requires you to learn much more than physical coordination. In order to surf a wave, you'll need patience, discipline, a lack of fear and an insatiable urge to have fun. There aren't many places in Europe that can post wicked surf scenes, but Spain and Portugal sure can! These countries have become known among surf aficionados for small towns with killer breaks. Ready, set, paddle!

Sip on Fine Wines…For Cheap!

The Mediterranean is home to some of the best-known wines in the world. The variety of climates spread across the Iberian Peninsula mean that both Spain and Portugal have very strong wine-making traditions…in fact Spain’s wine-producing dates all the way back to at least 3000 years ago! Not only that, but buying wines in these countries is CHEAP! It’s the backpacker’s paradise! Incredible wines for just a few dollars a bottle? Count us in! Whether you’re sipping on Portugal’s famed Vinho Verde, or trying a delicious bottle from the famous Rioja and Tempranillo regions of Spain, you are unlikely to have complaints. Looking to try something new? What about a fortified wine? Port and Madeira in Portugal, and Sherry in Spain are very well known and definitely worth a try. So let your inner wino out, save your dollars and start sipping!

Have Your Taste Buds Blown at La Boquería

Spain’s food markets are an essential part of life in the country. Fresh produce and seafood is abundant; it’s part of what makes Spain’s culinary scene so outstanding. Each neighborhood generally boats its own market where the commercial life of each area gathers. La Boquería in Las Ramblas is one of the most famed markets in Barcelona. Here you will find the freshest catch of the day, colourful fruits and vegetables, the most delicious cured meats (You must try the Jamon Iberico…it’s famous!), more olive oil (that you can ask to taste!) then you’ve seen in your life, and SO MUCH MORE! If you’re a foodie then La Boquiería is heaven. Even if you’re not, you’re going to want to go experience, and taste, it. Venturing into the market means discovering the essence of Barcelona.

Explore the Alhambra

One of the largest tourist attractions in Granada, and one of the most visited monuments in all of Spain, the Alhambra is not to be missed. And lucky for you, Free & Easy is happy to include a guided tour of this epic spot in your trip to this glorious country! A UNESCO World Heritage Site, this Moorish citadel and palace is the most renowned building to come of the Andalusian Islamic history. The Iberian Peninsula (then known as Hispania) was conquered by the Moors of North Africa in the early 8th century, when it came to be known as Al-Andalus. The Alhambra was built by the Moors in the 9th century and overlooks all of Granada, providing some truly stunning views (and sunsets to boot). Its name can be loosely translated from Arabic as the Red Castle, due to the distinct reddish hue of its walls. Walk your way through history and some stunning architecture in Granada!

Listen to Fado

An extremely popular music genre traced back to the early 1800s, Fado is a form of Portuguese singing that is often associated with sitting with a drink in hand in pubs, cafes and restaurants. It is extremely melodic and expressive in nature, but also profoundly mournful. The singer will express melancholy at the harsh realities of daily life, whether it’s of the life of the poor or the life of the sailor at sea, and the music is infused with resignation and fatefulness. They are often accompanied by 12-string guitars, violas and even 8-string basses. Fado is a very important musical tradition in Portugal, having made UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage Lists, and you would be doing yourself a disservice to miss out on it while in this wonderful country!

Drink All the Sangria

Ah, Sangria. Does anything taste better on a balmy summer day as you sit chatting with friends on your porch? Well it’s even better when you’re chilling in Spain and Portugal with your brand spankin’ new TFFs! Spain and Portugal are the Sangria Capitals of Europe! Not only has Sangria been around in these areas for close to 2,000 years, but it’s also where you will find some of the cheapest, most delicious versions of this wine cocktail that you can imagine. So what exactly is Sangria? Traditionally it consists of red wine (although some people now make it with white instead), chopped fruit like orange, lemon, peaches and/or berries, a sweetener like honey or fruit juice, and brandy. It’s then left to sit in the fridge for as little as a few minutes all the way up to a few days! Thinking of ordering a glass of it? Forget it…order a pitcher. Some nightclubs even sell it by the 2L bottle. Now that’s hardcore. Whether you’re tucked away in a tiny café off La Rambla, or sitting in a beachside bar in Lagos, this wine-based specialty is sure to quench your thirst and lead to the best of times.

Ramble Down La Rambla

Welcome to La Rambla, the most famous street in Spain. A beautiful tree-lined promenade located in central Barcelona, La Rambla forms the boundary between the Gothic Quarter to the east and El Raval to the west. Here you can find street traders and performers, kiosks selling newspapers and flowers, as well as pavement cafés and bars. Originally a waterway, the pavement itself has actually been designed to reflect its history with a rippling, water-like pattern. Stroll along and stop at everything from a celebrated Joan Miró mosaic, to famed La Boquería market, and Barcelona’s oldest theatre, the Teatre Principal. Wander down any of La Rambla’s branching side streets and you will come across tiny tapas bars, vintage stores, pubs, bakeries and anything else you can imagine. Some of your favourite nights in the city will probably happen around the hub that is La Rambla!

A picturesque working class quarter during the day, nighttime transforms this area of town into a boisterous backpacker’s dream. The bohemian heart of Lisbon, wander through trendy traditional and international restaurants, intimate Fado Houses with the sound of music wafting out doorways, a variety of alternative shops, and all the bumping bars your little traveling heart could desire. The absence of open-container laws and cheap alcohol means that a night on the town in Bairro Alto will introduce you to one of the most raucous party quarters in all of Europe. Everyone here is bar-hopping across cobbled streets, regardless of age, background or lifestyle. And don’t expect an early night in. Throughout the summer the partying continues until early into the morning. So put your Portuguese party pants on and enjoy the novelty of wandering the streets with cold drink in hand!

Nibble on Bacalhau

Bacalhau is the Portuguese word for cod and, in particular, dried and salted cod. It’s the most popular base ingredient in Portuguese cuisine, with its history traced back to the 14th century and Portugal’s era of exploration. This style of preparation allowed cod to be to be kept on ships for years, and became a staple in the Portuguese diet with the discovery of huge cod stocks off the shores of Newfoundland. Doused in vast quantities of salt and dried under the scorching Mediterranean sun in order to maintain preservation, the cod is then soaked in freshwater for 24 hours before being needed (to reduce the sale level) and then added to a variety of dishes. While dishes with Bacalhau might be a little outside of your culinary comfort-zone, while in Portugal make like the Portuguese! You only live once.

Booze Cruise Along the Portuguese Coast

While Lagos might be the perfect place to lie on the beach all day, Free & Easy is adding a little excitement to your trip to Southern Portugal. How about the best booze cruise in the country?! Lagos is famed for its Ponta de Piedade shoreline, with its weathered sandstone cliffs carved by nature into pillars, tunnels and hidden grottos, kissing crystal clear green and turquoise waters and an ultra blue sky. Experience the Flamenco

Flamenco goes to the heart of Spanish culture. An art-form native to the Andalusian region of Spain, it dates back to the 1700s, and is now popular the world over. In fact, there are actually more Flamenco academies in Japan than in Spain! On a technical level, Flamenco includes cante (singing), toque (guitar playing), baile (dance), jaleo (vocalizations), palmas (handclapping) and pitos (finger snapping). But really, going to see a Flamenco performance is an incredibly immersive experience not to be missed. The passion that is portrayed and enacted by the performers is captivating, and it truly is a unique style of art. Whether you simply want to go watch a show, or take a lesson while you’re there, Spain is THE place to experience the Flamenco.

Beach Cleanup

Our Trash Hero beach cleanups are a great way to do good, feel good, and get some beach all at the same time. With thousands of tons of trash swirling around the oceans, the unfortunate reality is that some of it washes up onto the beautiful beaches we fall in love with around the world. So we thought ‘Let’s do something about this!’ Our partnership with Trash Hero began in Koh Lipe, Thailand, where they regularly organized beach cleanup days. Today, Trash Hero has gone viral and can be found operating in Thailand and Indonesia, and is spreading into dozens more countries at a rapid pace. On our end, beach cleanup day quickly became one of the most fun and rewarding days on our Thailand trip. So we decided to spread the love, and have instituted a beach cleanup day into our regular itineraries across the world. Through our sponsorship and partnership with Trash Hero, our travellers and others like them have since collected tens of thousands of kilograms of trash from the beaches we travel to…and really, there’s nothing more epic than saving the world!
