San Juan del Sur

The stunning half-moon cove that San Juan del Sur is built around frames one of the coolest surf towns you're sure to ever experience. Old colonial buildings, a huge boardwalk of beachside bars and restaurants, and an all around laid-back surfer vibe are all part of the reason why being in San Juan is so awesome. The host town of our massive Nicaragua New Years trip each year and a staple on all of our Nicaragua trips, San Juan del Sur is the perfect place to have wicked beach days and wild party nights. The gateway to a huge score of amazing surf beaches all within a short drive from town makes San Juan an ideal destination for any surfer or beach lover and the town's ability to turn it up at night and host some of the best parties on the travel scene makes it so the fun never ends! Consistently good weather, endless cheap rum and very good waves… what more could you ask for?

Escameca

Arguably one of the nicest beaches in Central America, you won't find Playa Escameca in any travel books…that's because this spot is uniquely Free & Easy! This incredible stretch of beach is hidden way south on Nicaragua's Pacific coast, almost in Costa Rica, and boasts not only gorgeous scenery but also some seriously gnarly surfing conditions that you can enjoy all to yourself. Because the best part about Playa Escameca is that there's nothing there - no hotels, no bars, no other people! There's just the gorgeous bungalow style Casa Horizon: our very own FnEZ-built retreat. Days in Escameca can be spent in so many amazing ways. Whether you're simply soaking in the serene beauty of the surroundings, grabbing a surfboard and catching some waves right in front of the lodge, practicing yoga, swaying lazily in a hammock, or kicking back with some cervezas next to a beach fire, you won't find anywhere more different from your everyday life. Here you can do as you like and experience the true freedom of getting away from it all.

Mag Rock

Magnific Rock (or Mag Rock as it’s known to most) is home to some of the best surf break in all of Nicaragua. No joke, it’s incredible! When you wake up in the morning and look out over the ocean you can see four different breaks happening, and if that doesn’t get you itching to grab your board and dive in, we don’t know what will. Our accommodations are set up on a point that overlooks the Pacific Ocean, so not only are you guaranteed killer surf, but the awe-inspiring sunsets will blow your mind. Be prepared for a real-life watercolour sky of pinks and oranges every night as the sun meets the ocean. And after a full day of crushing out the best waves in Nicaragua, there’s nothing like chilling in the pool with an ice-cold Toña and the best view around. From yoga, to surfing, booze cruisin’ and having a grand old time down on the beach, we guarantee that you’ll be begging us not to leave Mag Rock.

Isla de Ometepe

Rising from the depths of the massive Lake Nicaragua is the majestic pyramid-like Concepción volcano and connected to it by a thin strip of land is the smaller but equally impressive Maderas volcano forming Isla de Ometepe, a twin-volcano island that is an amazing sight to behold and a delightfully relaxed place to visit. The island is filled with lush jungle vegetation and nice beaches that border the fresh water lake that stretches out like an ocean as far as the eye can see. The island's perfect soil makes it an ideal home for tons of small farms and plantations that grow about everything possible and make for some tasty and organic food options. Kayaking down rivers, hiking to waterfalls and relaxing in natural water springs only add to the beautiful experience of travelling to Isla de Ometepe.

It’s no secret that Costa Rica is a popular place to travel to and for good reason as its beauty is not exaggerated, and on our 10-day trip down the Pacific coast and up into the cloud forests you'll see it all firsthand! We road-trip through Costa Rica's famous Nicoya region, beginning in the north in Tamarindo to hit up some amazing surf breaks perfect for beginners and experts before heading south down the coast to the chill surf town of Santa Teresa. Our time on the coast will be spent surfing a ton, partying a ton, enjoying life on the beach and experiencing the 'Pura Vida' (good life) culture of the local Ticos! Finishing off the trip in the mountain town of Monteverde in Costa Rica's cloud forests gives you the chance to see a whole other side of the country's beauty. In the high elevation jungles, you'll see gorgeous views and an array of exotic wildlife including sloths, coatis, monkeys and a huge array of Disney-like tropical birds! Playa Tamarindo

One of the greatest surf spots on the planet, Tamarindo draws a huge array of different crowds to its huge beach lined with several amazing surf breaks. Surfing is definitely not the only thing to do here, but you're crazy if you don't at least try to paddle into a few sets. The water is warm, the sand is soft and there are perfect waves for every level of surfer whether it's your first time or you're looking to get straight pitted! We also use Tamarindo as a jumping point to explore the incredible and much more quiet beaches surrounding the town. Playa Minas, Playa Grande, Playa Negra and Playa Avellanas are just a few of the amazing beaches found near Tamarindo and we'll have our pick for where to spend the day when we feel like getting out of town. Being such a popular surf spot, Tamarindo has also grown into an infamous party spot so when you feel like throwing down there is certainly no shortage of places and people to turn it up with!

Santa Teresa

The small, surfer town of Santa Teresa stretches across a long, gravel road that runs parallel to several kilometres of very, very good beach breaks for every level of surfer. The waves of Santa Teresa have been pulling in surfers since people began travelling to Costa Rica and it continues to be the town's most popular activity. There can be a ruckus nightlife scene the odd night in Santa Teresa, but the priority of every backpacker, shopkeeper and ex-pat who's settled here is always: surf, surf, surf. And our time here on our 10-day Costa Rica trip is no different, even if we may dip into the rum at night, it'll be worked out sweating on the beaches and paddling out into the waves, because the waves and beach here is just way too good to let yourself sleep away the day in your room. Remember, there's no better cure to a hangover than catching a good wave!

One of the few gateways to this world is Monteverde, a cool mountain town teetering along the edges of the hills providing incredible views over the cloud forests and a relaxed place to spend your evenings after days of exploring the surrounding nature. Activities in Monteverde are fun and very plentiful, you can venture into the cloud forests via mountain bike, horseback, zip-line, rock climbing or on your own two feet. In town there are a variety of very cool places to check out, such as cheese, coffee and chocolate factories, reptile museums and many cafes and great restaurants. But the greatest joy in Monteverde is in just soaking in the natural environment by breathing in the air, walking through the forests, spotting one of the many cool animals and gawking at the incredible sight of Arenal Volcano in the distance.

But you’ll find that Lima is hiding a great deal of fun and wonderment within its city limits. The town itself, positioned around a dream-like picturesque lagoon, has grown into an infamous party spot for travellers in Peru. The surrounding desert dunes offer a playground to Huacachina’s visitors who can bomb up and down the dunes at breakneck speeds in dune buggies or strap on a sand-board and carve down the faces of the sandy mountains. Wine lovers can venture to the nearby vineyards as well and sample the famous Pisco wines. Epic Experiences you will have on this adventure

Rappel Down a Waterfall

Most of us have seen a waterfall from the top and bottom, gazing up (or down) at its immense power and beauty. But being able to get right inside a waterfall and travel from the top all the way to the bottom will give you a whole new appreciation for them! You can do this by strapping on some climbing gear, taking the rope and easing yourself down the waterfall! A total dream experience for anyone who has been mesmerized by the dazzling sight of a waterfall. And in Monteverde, where we experience this thrilling activity, you get to rappel down not just 1, but 6 waterfalls! The longest one measuring over 110 feet! You'll be hearing the Indiana Jones theme song the entire time as you lean back and guide yourself down and around waterfall after waterfall!

Explore Machu Picchu

Perched high up in the Andes Mountains, surrounded by lush green peaks and misty clouds, sits the lost Incan city of Machu Picchu. One of the 7 Wonders of the World and the most renowned archaeological site in the western hemisphere it's incredible in every way. From its mysterious and elaborate temples to its out-of-this-world location, it's a sight that everyone should aim to see once in their lifetime. Our local Incan guide will take us on a spiritual journey up the mountain, stopping for Coca Leaf and thankfulness ceremonies along the way. This is one experience that will leave your soul rejuvenated. The town of Machu Picchu, in the Urubamaba Valley, exists solely as a base camp for people to view the magnificent ruins by day and have a nice place to catch their breath by night. Despite being a town built around tourism, there is a mystical feel to the town appropriate to its location and it boasts one of the best night-markets you'll find in Peru.

Hike The Cristo De la Misericordia Viewpoint

The Christ of Mercy, or Cristo De La Misericordia, is the iconic statue overlooking the San Juan del Sur bay. But it's way more than that...it offers an incredible 360 degree view of the entire town and south pacific! At sunset, it's one of the most incredible views you will come across. Not only that, but at over 26m high, this Jesus statue is the largest statue of Christ in all of Central America and one of the largest in the world. Grab your travel buddies, a water (and probably a beer too) and hit the slope. You might find yourself enjoying the best view of your life! *hike, admission fee included in price

Rip through a Desert in a Dune Buggy

When you first think of deserts you may think of huge expanses of nothingness, flat and dry with nothing to do for fun. But in some deserts the wind has blown the sand into a wonderful terrain of mountains, valleys and wide-open plains that are a hell of a lot of fun to rip up and down on in a little vehicle designed for just that: a dune buggy. Surrounding the oasis town of Huacachina in Peru there is a vast playground of sand dunes, big and small, that we’ve discovered are best explored with a couple travel buddies in a dune buggy at break-neck speeds! Best of all, if you need to catch your breath you can slow it down and enjoy the incredible views of a gorgeous, coastal desert terrain that few have the chance to see in such a free and fun way!

Swim Through Phosphorescence

Phosphorescence (or bioluminescence) is the emission of light created by a variety of tiny, almost microscopic creatures as a defence mechanism. Perhaps the most fascinating display of this phenomenon takes place in the ocean when thousands of bioluminescent plankton scintillate a beautiful blue-green glow that brightens as the plankton are agitated. They can be stimulated by anything from crashing waves to moving boats or from people playing in the water! This opportunity to feel like you're creating magic occurs at times in almost every country we travel to and sometimes the plankton arrive in a magnificent density, creating some of the most unforgettable nights on our trips – most notably in Lao Liang and Koh Ang Thong in Thailand, but also along the Pacific Coast of Central America. So just because the sun has set doesn’t always mean the fun in the water is over! Always be sure to take a few steps into shore and check if you may have the opportunity to swim through phosphorescence because it's one of the most fun and beautiful experiences you may ever have!

Camping in the Peruvian Desert

What is the most epic end to a day of ripping around rollercoaster-style in giant dune buggies and sand boarding multiple peaks of the ever-changing dunes of Huacachina? Spending a night together with your FNEZ family camping right in the desert dunes. This experience comes complete with a Peruvian fire-grilled dinner and all-you-can-drink Pisco sours, catered to us by our favourite local guides! Lay back, look up at the twinkling stars and vast nighttime sky, and revel in the marvels of our world. It is a party and experience for the books, and not only will you wake up in awe that you just spent a night in your own private desert oasis, but you’ll get to witness one of the most epic sunrises of your life! So wipe away that hangover fog, breathe in the fresh air, and take in this once in a lifetime view.

Go Sandboarding

One of the best and most exciting feelings is just after you strap on your board and you're standing at the edge of a nice, big slope and about to slide your board that extra inch forward so you can start ripping down the mountain. The sun is shining and the sky is blue, you're wearing hardly any clothes and it's nice and hot out - wait, what!? Yes, for all you snowboarders out there that think it's limited to the winter, think again, as sandboarding down huge mountain dunes in the desert offers its own spin on the sport. And in the southern deserts of Peru, you can experience boarding in a whole new way when you climb up the massive sand dunes and gaze out across the beautiful desert hills and then tip your board over the edge and carve soft sand instead of snow in this exhilarating experience that is a must-do for every boarder, skier or lover of fun activities! And if you're not into boarding, try out a sand-toboggan…they’re actually faster!

Hike the Colca Canyon

Following the winding Colca River in southern Peru, the Colca Canyon is one of the deepest in the world. Its depth of 10,724 ft, or 3,270 m, makes it more than twice as deep as the Grand Canyon. And we get to hike it! After 6 kms of tight switchbacks finally bring you to the bottom, you’ll enjoy a nice lunch with all your travel buddies before heading another 16 kms across the canyon to our overnight lodgings. Here you will most likely jump into the pool fully clothed and exhausted while feeling immensely proud of yourself for having survived the hike into the canyon. Spend the night playing cards with your friends and trying not to nod off before hitting the hay at an early hour. If you’ve agreed to hike back out, you’ll be up at the crack of dawn for the 5 km trek straight back up the canyon. If your legs have given up on you from the previous day’s exertions, you can hire a mule to take you up. With amazing views the entire time and some wicked condor sightings, the Colca Canyon trek will push you mentally and physically beyond your comfort zone, but the feeling of accomplishment is phenomenal indeed.

Tickle your Taste Buds with a Chocolate Workshop

With cacao trees being native to the Americas, and Peru being home to one of the rarest cocan bean species around, a chocolate tour is definitely in order when visiting the country. Hit up an amazing chocolate workshop in Arequipa that will blow your chocolate senses. The owner Javier will walk you through some of the history of the cacao bean, talk about cocoa butter and its uses, have you sort and hand-grind some beans, and try a little Xocolatl (the drink of the Aztec kings). You are then shown the whole chocolate making process and even get to make your batch to take home, choosing from ingredients like coconut, goji berries, coca powder, salt and so forth to make your chocolate bonbons extra tasty. All the beans used in the shop are sourced from local producers and are certified Organic and Fair Trade. Afterwards, you can hang out in the café and have some of the most amazing hot chocolate around, or try some of the local craft beers on tap, or even buy some chocolate liquor or body scrubs to take home with you. This is every chocolate lover’s dream!!!

Paragliding in Lima

Have you always wanted to fly like a bird? Then head out for an awesome paragliding session in Lima! Right on the edge of the Miraflores district (where we stay) and on a set of beautiful cliffs overlooking the ocean, multiple Peruvian paragliding schools are available to take you out. Whether you take a one-day paragliding course or just fly tandem with a professional, there’s nothing like running off the cliff and feeling the wind grab the canopy as you soar away. From way up above Lima you’ll get an incredible ocean view, see how huge the city really is (10 million people!), and your instructor can point out beautiful sights and cool restaurants for you to check out later. This is definitely an amazing way to start or finish your trip to Peru!

Zip Lining

Experience the rush of adrenaline as you step off the platform, the wind in your face as you begin to speed up, leafy branches whipping by until you burst into a sweeping view of the surrounding landscape…feel like you’re flying yet? This is zip lining! It takes you to previously inaccessible parts of the country, from lush rainforests to tangled jungles. As you soar through and above the canopy, you get a bird’s eye view of everything around you for miles. While being up high in the sky isn’t for the faint of heart, zip lining takes you to a whole new world where you can sit back, relax, and zip along enjoying panoramas you probably couldn’t find anywhere else. It’s no surprise that when you come upon a group of zip liners there’s nothing but smiles and whoops of excitement as they travel from tree to tree and on to new adventures.

Hike a Volcano in a Rare Island Biosphere

Ometepe is a two-volcano island in the middle of a freshwater lake–the only place in the world like it. The base of the smaller of the two volcanoes, Volcan Maderas, is right near our accommodations and can make for a great day trip. At 1394m above sea level, and through a combination of diverse rainforest and tropical environments, it isn’t for the faint of heart. But you will feel like Indiana Jones as you clamber up large rocks, through vines and spend the day in awe of the rare island biosphere! If long hikes aren’t your thing your Free & Easy trip leaders can also organize horseback riding up to a waterfall along the other side of the volcano, or a kayak tour through the river mouth between both volcanoes! Regardless of your choice of adventure, keep your eyes open for exotic birds, monkeys and wider than normal smiles!

See Baby Turtles Hatch

Seeing streams of baby sea turtles burst through the sand on a tropical beach and scramble for the ocean is an incredible sight and is only possible on a few beaches in the world. Sea turtles have an astounding sense of radar and always return to the same beach they were born on to lay their eggs and two of these beaches are located in Nicaragua and Costa Rica and we visit both of them on our Central American adventures. The best time to see baby sea turtles hatch is at night around a full moon as the light from the moon guides the near-blind babies to the shore to catch a wave out to sea and the darkness helps protect them from predators. And if you’re lucky you may also see a full-size sea turtle ride a wave into shore, dig a deep hole on the beach and lay her eggs! *NOTE: THIS ACTIVITY IS SEASONAL FROM JULY TO FEBRUARY

Go Bungee Jumping

Bungee Jumping is one of those activities we all imagine we'll do once in our lives, but it's usually when people are travelling that they do it for the first time. Maybe it's because they don't give themselves the time at home or maybe it's because people feel a little more courageous away from home or maybe it's just a matter of: if not now, then when? Either way, bungee jumping is always a favourite activity on our trips and many people are encouraged to give it a try and why not? It's exciting! You're standing at the edge, staring out into the distance and feeling the fear build up inside you and then you finally leap off the edge and get a huge adrenaline rush as you fly straight down! It's quite a mental trip when you see the earth approaching so fast and your brain is telling you that you're about to die, but then you stop and go flying back up into the air as if you've just been reborn! If you've even got a slight urge to try it out then take the leap, you won't regret it!

Surf a Wave

Nothing compares to the feeling you get the first time you paddle into a wave, stand up as it breaks and ride the face of it – this is the incomparable feeling of surfing. When you get it right, you'll know, because you'll be more excited than the first time you had sex and probably more addicted to it, too! Surfing is arguably the most challenging sport in the world and requires you to learn much more than physical coordination. In order to surf a wave, you'll need patience, discipline, a lack of fear and an insatiable urge to have fun. It's no coincidence that 7 of the countries that we run trips to (Indonesia, the Philippines, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Peru & South Africa) have wicked surf scenes, because there's nothing quite like it. *** PLEASE NOTE surfing is dependent on the right conditions and not always possible

Soak It Up at a Hot Spring

After finishing your Colca Canyon trek in the morning, the likelihood that your legs will be stiff as boards is rather high. So what better way to relax those muscles and give yourself a pat on the back for a hike well done than to soak in some luxurious Peruvian hot springs? Pop into your bikini or boardies, grab a beer, and soak up the warmth in a set of terraced stone pools located at the bottom of a river valley. With 5 different tiered pools containing water of varying temperatures, there’s something for everyone. So sit back, relax, and revel in the fact that you’re in Peru with an amazing group of people having the time of your life - and that the hike is over!

Extreme Activities in the Sacred Valley

No trip is complete without a day of adrenaline pumping action, and that’s exactly what you get on our day out in the Sacred Valley! If you really want to get out of your comfort zone, bungee jumping will be right up your alley. Considered the highest bungee jump in South America, you will get to experience a free fall from a platform set 122 meters (just over 400 ft) above the Sacred Valley. Not only will you get an epic view from above, but your adrenaline will be spiking extra hard! Want to make it extra exciting? You could soar over 100 meters high with the highest slingshot bungee in the world! If you’ve always wanted to be Superman, this is your chance. Need to calm your nerves after all this excitement? A little paintball should do the trick. With a variety of obstacles and structures to hunker down in, and probably some live sheep thrown into the mix as well, throw on your animal onesie, grab your paintball gun, and have an amazing time with your friends (animal onesie not included). This will be a day you won't forget!

Adventure Sports in The Sacred Valley

The Sacred Valley of the Incas, also known as the Urubamba Valley, encompasses the heartland of what was once the Inca Empire. Dotted with everything from rocky hills and mountains, to lush grass-covered terraces, it makes a beautiful backdrop for an adrenaline packed day of adventure sports! With both mountain biking and white water rafting available as very affordable options, you’ll want to grab this chance to see the Sacred Valley from a whole new perspective. Spend 3 hours paddling down a winding river with a seasoned guide leading you through epic rapids. You will even have the chance to float alongside the boat for certain stretches or jump off large boulders into the water. Or, you could grab your mountain bike and peddle off for a day of adventures. Cycle through the picturesque valley and feel yourself be transported back to an ancient time. You’ll be physically and mentally challenged, and will come out at the end of the day with a big smile and no regrets!

Catch a Fish and Eat It, Too

We get so many people who come on our trips that say they don't like seafood and won't eat it - usually, they're not from a coastal town. So when we serve up a fresh barracuda or tuna or some other tasty fish that the fisherman caught that morning and we convince them to give it a try, the first thing they say (with a satisfied smile) is that this doesn't taste like the seafood they've tried. There's just no getting around it, fish is meant to be eaten fresh! And the only thing tastier than a fresh fish is one that you caught, too! Catching the fish that you eat used to be a part of life and still is in many parts of the world, however, more and more people are buying from the commercial fishing industry which is unsustainable and is destroying the ocean's eco-system. We offer the option to go fishing on nearly all of our trips with friendly, local fisherman that show you their tricks - it's an experience that not only teaches you the importance of fishing but is also a hell of a good time: on a boat, with friends, with beer, in the sun, drifting down a tropical coastline… 'nuff said!

Tour the ‘Backpacker’s Galapagos' Ballestas Islands

Hop on a boat and cruise out an hour or so into the Pacific Ocean off of Peru's southern coast to a group of small islands called the Ballestas Islands, an amazing sanctuary for a colourful variety of incredible animals. First, be greeted by the barks and howls of the thousands of sea lions that sound like a wolf-pack surrounding you on every side. The playful sea lions are a curious bunch and will often approach the boats looking for new playmates, but the spectacle of creatures only gets more exciting as there is a large density of penguins and the infamous blue-footed booby, a hilarious bird with bright blue feet. Often called the 'Mini Galapagos' because of the extraordinary display of wildlife, you'll have the chance to view over 1,500 different species of species when making the unforgettable trip out to the Ballestas Islands!

Practice Yoga on the Beach

Practicing yoga on the beach in warm, tropical weather provides you with the perfect environment to learn how to find a calm within yourself and feel your mind truly relax. Listening to the sounds of the jungle and the crashing of the waves on shore only adds to the bliss of this experience. You can experience practicing yoga in a beautiful and isolated setting under the expert guidance of yoga instructors on several of our our trips. So take an hour or so out of your day to stretch, breathe and enjoy one of the best yoga sessions of your life in paradise!

Bathe Under a Waterfall

When leaving home and hitting the road with your backpack, one thought you may have in mind is that you're not going to have another good shower for awhile. In most parts of the world water pressure is lower, there is often no hot water and you just can't seem to scrub off that distinct backpacker odour. However, there is one place where hundreds of gallons of refreshing fresh water can pour all over you in a surreal bathing experience and that spot is found at the bottom of a waterfall. When hiking around jungles, one of our favourite things to search out is a good tropical waterfall where you can swim, relax, and get right under it and let the huge torrent of water pour all over you and wash you clean! But the best part is often the simple sight of the waterfall itself, because for whatever reason there are few things in the world we find more captivating to watch than water dropping from great heights. Maybe it's because nothing falls with the grace of water, but either way it's an amazing feeling to come upon a gorgeous waterfall in the jungle and head straight into its downpour for the best shower of your life!

Walk on a Rainbow

Live a real life Mario Kart dream on your very own Rainbow Road! Rainbow Mountain, also known as Vinicunca, is a ridiculously beautiful section of the Andes. It’s one of those hidden gems that few backpackers make it out to, and we couldn’t be more excited to offer it as an optional day trip on our FnEZ Peru trips! Imagine glacial mountain streams that form a tapestry as they weave their way through lush green fields and pastures home to thousands of grazing alpacas, tiny villages consisting of mud brick houses and locals in traditional outfits (along with the cutest wide-eyed children waiting to give you a high five), and finally, at the peak, an incredible mountain range lit up with spectrum of purples, greens, blues, yellows and reds. Don’t just take our word for it, though; this is something you NEED to experience for yourself. Once you get to the peak and your jaw hits the ground (erm…rainbow?), you’ll understand why we just keep going back. * * * NOTE: The optional Rainbow Mountain hike is our highest elevated hike. Because of the high altitude we only recommend this hike for the physically fit. * * *

Pacific Coast Booze-Cruise!

Nicaragua's southwest coast is arguably Central America's nicest stretch of beaches. With one massive sprawling beach after another framed by rocky cliffs and fascinating fauna from cacti to palm trees, seeing as much of this coast as possible is must for any visitor to Nicaragua. Unfortunately, the coastal roads in Nicaragua are not very accessible to say the least and so really the best way to see all these beaches is by sailing the open sea! Boarding a catamaran sailboat stocked with ceviche, guacamole and as much beer and rum as possible is the way we like to do it to fully enjoy spending the day gawking at the stunning natural setting while at the same time, throwing down and having a party fit for such a glorious sailing experience. Oh and we almost forgot to mention the wicked surf breaks at almost all of these beaches, so there's always the option of tossing the board in and paddling into some gnarly sets before continuing on our way. Some crazy stuff tends to go down on this adventure as it's always a highlight of the trip, but you'll just have to experience it for yourself to see what's possible when you disembark into the Nicaragua's pacific coast with an arsenal of friends armed with all the makings for an epic good time!

It's no coincidence that 6 of the countries that we run trips to (Indonesia, the Philippines, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Peru & Colombia) have wicked surf scenes, because there's nothing quite like it.

Stand Up Paddling in Santa Teresa

Let’s be honest, after all the partying you’ll most likely be doing down here in Central America, you might feel the need for a little workout (or not, but let’s be optimistic). So why not try one of the most popular new sports in the Americas–Stand Up Paddling (SUP). Down in the small, surfer town of Santa Teresa you can find several kilometres of gleaming sands, crystal-clear waters and wicked beach breaks for every level of surfer…and that makes it ideal for SUP-ing as well! You don’t want to be sleeping the day away in this paradise. Time to get out in the sun and waves, and get a full body workout on your paddleboard. And hey, if you need a little break you can just stretch out and catch some rays on your board before picking that paddle back up. Not only that, but rental includes a coupla’ bevvies (we can’t say no to free booze) and even a photographer so you have some wicked pics of your ocean adventure!

Rock Climb Peru

Most of us have tried rock climbing, but it's usually been in a sweaty gym with an artificial climbing wall that is trying to mimic the outdoor experience of rock climbing. When you climb a natural cliff face, your body seems to know it and you almost feel like you're tapping into a core part of your humanity that is telling you that somehow, someway you have to scale this cliff - and most people surprise themselves with their ability to do it. One of the best parts of outdoor rock climbing is that it's generally done in some of the most surreal places on this planet so when you get to the top of your climb you're rewarded with a breathtaking view. So get your climb on in Peru!

Pisco Tasting Tour

Pisco. While you may have never heard of this magical liquid, it is the national liquor of Peru! A grape brandy that is most commonly found in the country’s national drink, the Pisco Sour, on this trip you will be lucky enough to get a pisco tasting tour! You will visit a small vineyard outside of Ica, be walked through the whole distillation process from start to finish, and then be led to the tasting room where you will sip a variety of pisco wines and liqueurs. And while many a morning will be spent wishing you had imbibed one (or three) less piscos the night before (a hangover at high altitude is no joke!), pisco will undoubtedly be part of some of your fondest memories from your time in Peru. Don’t forget to take a bottle home with you to continue the good times!

Cooking class in Cusco

After getting a taste of some of the local delicacies Peru has to offer, you’ll be itching to get in the kitchen and learn how to make some of these dishes on your own! In the culturally rich city of Cusco, we have the opportunity to throw on some colorful aprons and get to cooking alongside our very own Peruvian chef. With step by step instructions on how to prepare a popular drink and delicious main dish, we leave the class ready to show all our family and friends back home the tasty treats Peru has to offer! The chef instructing the class also gives some background to the drinks and dishes history and relevance in Peruvian culture. First up, the class chooses whether to prepare a Pisco Sour, the Peruvian national cocktail, or Chicha Morada, a non-alcoholic drink originally from the Andes of Peru. The main course options are between two traditional and equally delicious dishes, Aji de Gallina or Lomo Saltado. The kitchen is also able to make recipe modifications based on food restrictions or allergies the group may have. In typical Free & Easy fashion, we make sure the cooking class is not only informative but super fun!

Yoga in Pisac

Wind down after some invigorating hikes and enjoy a tranquil yoga class in the beautiful Sacred Valley of the Incas just outside of Cusco, also known as the Urubamba Valley. The quaint town of Pisac is surrounded by Incan Ruins and nestled along the same river that flows to Machu Picchu town known as the Urubamba River. Guided by an experienced and trained yoga teacher, we move through restorative poses and meditative postures to stretch out those sore legs post-Colca Canyon trek. Palo Santo and gentle music fill the room to create a serene environment for quieting the mind as we connect deeper within ourselves. The energy from the ancient ruins that lay in Peru is known to be felt by locals and tourists alike. Through this mindful yoga practice, we get the chance to receive the powerful energy that lies in the Sacred Valley. Leave this class feeling relaxed and rejuvenated, with an improved balance between body and mind.

Have a Sunday Funday

Beers, babes, beats… tasty shots, infinite rum, super soakers full of booze… tropical weather, amazing views, and a pool crawl - together that spells Sunday Funday! Experience the best day of the week in proper Nica fashion with the legendary Sunday Funday pool crawl, taking you to the best party spots around the infamous surf town of San Juan del Sur all day. Each spot has the same thing in common, a nice refreshing pool to take a dip in and dance around, wicked music pumping, and tons of drinks flowing! With hundreds of rowdy young travellers attending each Sunday, this event has grown into one of the best parties in Central America and why not, because who doesn’t love to have fun on Sunday? Get weird, get freaky, get wet, get wasted, do whatever you want because this party starts early and goes as late as you want it to go!

Beach Cleanup

Our Trash Hero beach cleanups are a great way to do good, feel good, and get some beach all at the same time. With thousands of tons of trash swirling around the oceans, the unfortunate reality is that some of it washes up onto the beautiful beaches we fall in love with around the world. So we thought ‘Let’s do something about this!’ Our partnership with Trash Hero began in Koh Lipe, Thailand, where they regularly organized beach cleanup days. Today, Trash Hero has gone viral and can be found operating in Thailand and Indonesia, and is spreading into dozens more countries at a rapid pace. On our end, beach cleanup day quickly became one of the most fun and rewarding days on our Thailand trip. So we decided to spread the love, and have instituted a beach cleanup day into our regular itineraries across the world. Through our sponsorship and partnership with Trash Hero, our travellers and others like them have since collected tens of thousands of kilograms of trash from the beaches we travel to…and really, there’s nothing more epic than saving the world! ** We will always strive to make a beach cleanup happen, but sometimes we may not be able to make it happen **
