It’s no secret that Costa Rica is a popular place to travel to and for good reason as its beauty is not exaggerated, and on our 10-day trip down the Pacific coast and up into the cloud forests you'll see it all firsthand! We road-trip through Costa Rica's famous Nicoya region, beginning in the north in Tamarindo to hit up some amazing surf breaks perfect for beginners and experts before heading south down the coast to the chill surf town of Santa Teresa. Our time on the coast will be spent surfing a ton, partying a ton, enjoying life on the beach and experiencing the 'Pura Vida' (good life) culture of the local Ticos! Finishing off the trip in the mountain town of Monteverde in Costa Rica's cloud forests gives you the chance to see a whole other side of the country's beauty. In the high elevation jungles, you'll see gorgeous views and an array of exotic wildlife including sloths, coatis, monkeys and a huge array of Disney-like tropical birds! The amazing sights and sounds of Costa Rica will follow you everywhere on this crazy fun road-trip and with tons of extra activities and stops along the way, there's an infinity of ways to enjoy this adventure!

Playa Tamarindo

One of the greatest surf spots on the planet, Tamarindo draws a huge array of different crowds to its huge beach lined with several amazing surf breaks. Surfing is definitely not the only thing to do here, but you're crazy if you don't at least try to paddle into a few sets. The water is warm, the sand is soft and there are perfect waves for every level of surfer whether it's your first time or you're looking to get straight pitted! We also use Tamarindo as a jumping point to explore the incredible and much more quiet beaches surrounding the town. Playa Minas, Playa Grande, Playa Negra and Playa Avellanas are just a few of the amazing beaches found near Tamarindo and we'll have our pick for where to spend the day when we feel like getting out of town. Being such a popular surf spot, Tamarindo has also grown into an infamous party spot so when you feel like throwing down there is certainly no shortage of places and people to turn it up with!

Santa Teresa

The small, surfer town of Santa Teresa stretches across a long, gravel road that runs parallel to several kilometres of very, very good beach breaks for every level of surfer. The waves of Santa Teresa have been pulling in surfers since people began travelling to Costa Rica and it continues to be the town's most popular activity. There can be a ruckus nightlife scene the odd night in Santa Teresa, but the priority of every backpacker, shopkeeper and ex-pat who's settled here is always: surf, surf, surf. And our time here on our 10-day Costa Rica trip is no different, even if we may dip into the rum at night, it'll be worked out sweating on the beaches and paddling out into the waves, because the waves and beach here is just way too good to let yourself sleep away the day in your room. Remember, there's no better cure to a hangover than catching a good wave!

Monteverde

Up in the mountains of Costa Rica lies the cloud forests, lush jungles hiding an incredible world of waterfalls, exotic fauna and an array of strange and beautiful animals. One of the few gateways to this world is Monteverde, a cool mountain town teetering along the edges of the hills providing incredible views over the cloud forests and a relaxed place to spend your evenings after days of exploring the surrounding nature. Activities in Monteverde are fun and very plentiful, you can venture into the cloud forests via mountain bike, horseback, zip-line, rock climbing or on your own two feet. In town there are a variety of very cool places to check out, such as cheese, coffee and chocolate factories, reptile museums and many cafes and great restaurants. But the greatest joy in Monteverde is in just soaking in the natural environment by breathing in the air, walking through the forests, spotting one of the many cool animals and gawking at the incredible sight of Arenal Volcano in the distance.

The Final Fiesta
Nicaragua
San Juan del Sur

The stunning half-moon cove that San Juan del Sur is built around frames one of the coolest surf towns you're sure to ever experience. Old colonial buildings, a huge boardwalk of beachside bars and restaurants, and an all around laid-back surfer vibe are all part of the reason why being in San Juan is so awesome. The host town of our massive Nicaragua New Years trip each year and a staple on all of our Nicaragua trips, San Juan del Sur is the perfect place to have wicked beach days and wild party nights. The gateway to a huge score of amazing surf beaches all within a short drive from town makes San Juan an ideal destination for any surfer or beach lover and the town's ability to turn it up at night and host some of the best parties on the travel scene makes it so the fun never ends! Consistently good weather, endless cheap rum and very good waves… what more could you ask for?

The Final Fiesta
Nicaragua
Laguna de Apoyo.

Laguna de Apoyo is a pristine lake inside the crater of a dormant volcano. After being declared a national nature reserve in 1991, Laguna de Apoyo has been fiercely protected from invasive resorts and remains a beautiful natural refuge. The stunning lagoon is warmed to a comfortable temperature from the earth's core and is widely hailed as having the cleanest water in Central America. A variety of exotic wildlife can be found around the lake, but time is best spent here relaxing in one of the cozy lakeside houses. We end each one of our Nicaragua trips in a wicked lodge right on the lake in Laguna de Apoyo and it's one of the best places we could imagine to wind down after an epic adventure and maybe even have one last party before the journey comes to an end! !

The Final Fiesta
Nicaragua
Mag Rock.

Magnific Rock (or Mag Rock as it’s known to most) is home to some of the best surf break in all of Nicaragua. No joke, it’s incredible! When you wake up in the morning and look out over the ocean you can see four different breaks happening, and if that doesn’t get you itching to grab your board and dive in, we don’t know what will. Our accommodations are set up on a point that overlooks the Pacific Ocean, so not only are you guaranteed killer surf, but the awe-inspiring sunsets will blow your mind. Be prepared for a real-life watercolour sky of pinks and oranges every night as the sun meets the ocean. And after a full day of crushing out the best waves in Nicaragua, there’s nothing like chilling in the pool with an ice-cold Toña and the best view around. From yoga, to surfing, booze cruisin’ and having a grand old time down on the beach, we guarantee that you’ll be begging us not to leave Mag Rock.

The Final Fiesta
Nicaragua
Playa Escameca

Arguably one of the nicest beaches in Central America, you won't find Playa Escameca in any travel books…that's because this spot is uniquely Free & Easy! This incredible stretch of beach is hidden way south on Nicaragua's Pacific coast, almost in Costa Rica, and boasts not only gorgeous scenery but also some seriously gnarly surfing conditions that you can enjoy all to yourself. Because the best part about Playa Escameca is that there's nothing there - no hotels, no bars, no other people! There's just the gorgeous bungalow style Casa Horizon: our very own FnEZ-built retreat. Days in Escameca can be spent in so many amazing ways. Whether you're simply soaking in the serene beauty of the surroundings, grabbing a surfboard and catching some waves right in front of the lodge, practicing yoga, swaying lazily in a hammock, or kicking back with some cervezas next to a beach fire, you won't find anywhere more different from your everyday life. Here you can do as you like and experience the true freedom of getting away from it all.

The Final Fiesta
Nicaragua
Playa Gigante

Translated to 'Gigantic Beach', Playa Gigante's gorgeous beach stretches out far in both directions bookended by towering cliffs that provide stunning viewpoints of this amazing peaceful area of Nicaragua's Pacific Coast. The town of Gigante is not much more than a small fishing village, but it offers everything you need to live and when you're at a place as amazing as Playa Gigante, the bare essentials are luxury enough! There are several world-class surf breaks within walking distance, some very nice yoga studios that offer daily classes and some of the best ocean fishing in Central America. The only bar in town can also throw a banging party when people are in the mood.

The Final Fiesta
Nicaragua
Playa Hermosa

There are beautiful beaches and then there's Playa Hermosa. With an ideal soft but packed sand base that stretches as far as the eye can see in both directions, a handful of great swimming spots, and even more gem surf breaks, Hermosa truly is the idyllic Central American beach. It's just hard enough to get to that it's secluded, but still easy enough that it's well, well worth the drive. The surfers and day-trippers give it a fun and happening vibe during the day and at night, you've got the whole place to yourself. There's only one lodge on the beach, but it's always stocked with plenty of cold beer, serves up great food and is always willing to help you out by setting up a volleyball net or building a beach fire. Mix all that with the fact that it's not uncommon to see sea turtles show up on shore and lay eggs and you've really got everything you need in a beach destination at Hermosa. The cozy cabin style rooms enjoy a sweet beach breeze and complete the rustic comfort of the stay. We get as creative as we can with these precious days on Playa Hermosa, grabbing a surf board and playing on the many breaks, pulling out a frisbee or volleyball, throwing down a Beach Olympics event, lazing in the hammocks, looking for turtles, and at night, a mix of homemade pizzas, Nicaraguan rum and a roaring beach fire usually takes care of everything!

The Final Fiesta
Nicaragua
Playa Maderas

Nicaragua has some seriously world-class beach breaks that offer not only wicked surf, but also a very relaxing beach atmosphere, and there is perhaps none better than Playa Maderas. Situated just north of San Juan del Sur, Maderas is a common day-trip spot for surfers and people staying in San Juan and so the beach is fully equipped with bars serving up marguerites, cold cervezas and some super tasty fish tacos. Then you can decide whether you want to stay beach-side and watch the surfers or paddle out and shred one of the most consistent beach breaks in the world. Surfers can expect tons of lefts, some occasional ripper rights and virtually constant off-shore winds to ensure every paddle out is well worth it. But getting to stay out on Playa Maderas allows you to enjoy a whole other aspect of this legendary beach. We rent out a big beach house and when everyone else has to head home as the sun sets, we enjoy the last bit of light strolling down the beach to our pad. Then with everyone gone, we have the place to ourselves! Sit out on the beach around a fire, pull out the guitar, look up at the stars, maybe neck a bottle of rum and throw a house party... do as you please until the morning comes and brings with it another stellar day on Playa Maderas!

Epic Experiences you will have on this adventure

Rappel Down a Waterfall

Most of us have seen a waterfall from the top and bottom, gazing up (or down) at its immense power and beauty. But being able to get right inside a waterfall and travel from the top all the way to the bottom will give you a whole new appreciation for them! You can do this by strapping on some climbing gear, taking the rope and easing yourself down the waterfall! A total dream experience for anyone who has been mesmerized by the dazzling sight of a waterfall. And in Monteverde, where we experience this thrilling activity, you get to rappel down not just 1, but 6 waterfalls! The longest one measuring over 110 feet! You'll be hearing the Indiana Jones theme song the entire time as you lean back and guide yourself down and around waterfall after waterfall!

Hike The Cristo De la Misericordia Viewpoint

The Christ of Mercy, or Cristo De La Misericordia, is the iconic statue overlooking the San Juan del Sur bay. But it's way more than that...it offers an incredible 360 degree view of the entire town and south pacific! At sunset, it's one of the most incredible views you will come across. Not only that, but at over 26m high, this Jesus statue is the largest statue of Christ in all of Central America and one of the largest in the world. Grab your travel buddies, a water (and probably a beer too) and hit the slope. You might find yourself enjoying the best view of your life! *hike, admission fee included in price

Epic New Years Eve Beach Party

For this epic night we team up with the party specialists at Pacha Mama and throw the biggest beach party in Central America! Right on the beach in the middle of San Juan del Sur, this is the New Years party that everyone is trying to get into. Big name DJs, marching bands, party bling...it's got all the ingredients to help you ring in the new year in the most epic of ways. There's a reason you didn't stay home this year! And you'll feel extra fly when you walk in with your TFFs and realize that Free & Easy has hooked you up with our very own separate VIP area and bar to hangout at, watch the madness, and tip back free champagne at midnight! Don’t expect the dancing to end until the wee hours of the morning... could it get any better? Feliz Año Nuevo amigos! HAPPY NEW YEARS!

Exclusive Free & Easy All-You-Can-Drink Pool Party

After a day spent drinking, lounging, and surfing at beautiful Hermosa beach with your Free & Easy family, it's time to crank things up! Tomorrow is New Years Eve, and the party really needs to get started in San Juan del Sur. So we crank things up the evening of December 30th with an incredible Pool Party for Free & Easy Travelers only! Trust us, this exclusive party will blow your flip flops off. A live mariachi band & DJs are only the beginning of this epic party...you're going to be dancing poolside and beach front all night long with 200 of your newest best friends! And did we mention Free & Easy is covering ALL THE BOOZE you can drink too? This fiesta will have you saying ‘Por que no?’ in no time!

Zip Lining

Experience the rush of adrenaline as you step off the platform, the wind in your face as you begin to speed up, leafy branches whipping by until you burst into a sweeping view of the surrounding landscape…feel like you’re flying yet? This is zip lining! It takes you to previously inaccessible parts of the country, from lush rainforests to tangled jungles. As you soar through and above the canopy, you get a bird’s eye view of everything around you for miles. While being up high in the sky isn’t for the faint of heart, zip lining takes you to a whole new world where you can sit back, relax, and zip along enjoying panoramas you probably couldn’t find anywhere else. It’s no surprise that when you come upon a group of zip liners there’s nothing but smiles and whoops of excitement as they travel from tree to tree and on to new adventures.

Surf a Wave

Nothing compares to the feeling you get the first time you paddle into a wave, stand up as it breaks and ride the face of it – this is the incomparable feeling of surfing. When you get it right, you'll know, because you'll be more excited than the first time you had sex and probably more addicted to it, too! Surfing is arguably the most challenging sport in the world and requires you to learn much more than physical coordination. In order to surf a wave, you'll need patience, discipline, a lack of fear and an insatiable urge to have fun. It's no coincidence that 7 of the countries that we run trips to (Indonesia, the Philippines, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Peru & South Africa) have wicked surf scenes, because there's nothing quite like it. *** PLEASE NOTE surfing is dependent on the right conditions and not always possible

Stand Up Paddling in Santa Teresa

Let’s be honest, after all the partying you’ll most likely be doing down here in Central America, you might feel the need for a little workout (or not, but let’s be optimistic). So why not try one of the most popular new sports in the Americas–Stand Up Paddling (SUP). Down in the small, surfer town of Santa Teresa you can find several kilometres of gleaming sands, crystal-clear waters and wicked beach breaks for every level of surfer…and that makes it ideal for SUP-ing as well! You don’t want to be sleeping the day away in this paradise. Time to get out in the sun and waves, and get a full body workout on your paddleboard. And hey, if you need a little break you can just stretch out and catch some rays on your board before picking that paddle back up. Not only that, but rental includes a coupla’ bevvies (we can’t say no to free booze) and even a photographer so you have some wicked pics of your ocean adventure!

Catch a Fish and Eat It, Too

We get so many people who come on our trips that say they don't like seafood and won't eat it - usually, they're not from a coastal town. So when we serve up a fresh barracuda or tuna or some other tasty fish that the fisherman caught that morning and we convince them to give it a try, the first thing they say (with a satisfied smile) is that this doesn't taste like the seafood they've tried. There's just no getting around it, fish is meant to be eaten fresh! And the only thing tastier than a fresh fish is one that you caught, too! Catching the fish that you eat used to be a part of life and still is in many parts of the world, however, more and more people are buying from the commercial fishing industry which is unsustainable and is destroying the ocean's eco-system. We offer the option to go fishing on nearly all of our trips with friendly, local fisherman that show you their tricks - it's an experience that not only teaches you the importance of fishing but is also a hell of a good time: on a boat, with friends, with beer, in the sun, drifting down a tropical coastline… 'nuff said!

Practice Yoga on the Beach

Practicing yoga on the beach in warm, tropical weather provides you with the perfect environment to learn how to find a calm within yourself and feel your mind truly relax. Listening to the sounds of the jungle and the crashing of the waves on shore only adds to the bliss of this experience. You can experience practicing yoga in a beautiful and isolated setting under the expert guidance of yoga instructors on several of our our trips. So take an hour or so out of your day to stretch, breathe and enjoy one of the best yoga sessions of your life in paradise!

Bathe Under a Waterfall

When leaving home and hitting the road with your backpack, one thought you may have in mind is that you're not going to have another good shower for awhile. In most parts of the world water pressure is lower, there is often no hot water and you just can't seem to scrub off that distinct backpacker odour. However, there is one place where hundreds of gallons of refreshing fresh water can pour all over you in a surreal bathing experience and that spot is found at the bottom of a waterfall. When hiking around jungles, one of our favourite things to search out is a good tropical waterfall where you can swim, relax, and get right under it and let the huge torrent of water pour all over you and wash you clean! But the best part is often the simple sight of the waterfall itself, because for whatever reason there are few things in the world we find more captivating to watch than water dropping from great heights. Maybe it's because nothing falls with the grace of water, but either way it's an amazing feeling to come upon a gorgeous waterfall in the jungle and head straight into its downpour for the best shower of your life!

New Year’s Day Shindig at The Surf Ranch

The good times just keep coming as we roll into this little poolside paradise. You might be tired from last night's epic New Years bash, but this is THE place to be on New Year's Day. Another Nica New Years exclusive party for group members only, where we rent out the entire facility. So drag your hungover behind out of bed, throw on a pair of sunnies and catch one of the Free & Easy buses out to this big ol' shindig...because this is one pool party you don't want to miss. From the bull shaped pool to palm trees, skate park, live DJs, to BBQ and BEER, you can’t kick off the year in any better way. Surrounded by your Free & Easy Familia and the surreal surroundings of The Surf Ranch, you know that the year ahead is bound to be a good one if this is how it's starting. **Drinks not included…but you might get passed a Texas Micky or two of delectable Flor De Caña rum!

Go Bungee Jumping

Bungee Jumping is one of those activities we all imagine we'll do once in our lives, but it's usually when people are travelling that they do it for the first time. Maybe it's because they don't give themselves the time at home or maybe it's because people feel a little more courageous away from home or maybe it's just a matter of: if not now, then when? Either way, bungee jumping is always a favourite activity on our trips and many people are encouraged to give it a try and why not? It's exciting! You're standing at the edge, staring out into the distance and feeling the fear build up inside you and then you finally leap off the edge and get a huge adrenaline rush as you fly straight down! It's quite a mental trip when you see the earth approaching so fast and your brain is telling you that you're about to die, but then you stop and go flying back up into the air as if you've just been reborn! If you've even got a slight urge to try it out then take the leap, you won't regret it!

Pacific Coast Booze-Cruise!

Nicaragua's southwest coast is arguably Central America's nicest stretch of beaches. With one massive sprawling beach after another framed by rocky cliffs and fascinating fauna from cacti to palm trees, seeing as much of this coast as possible is must for any visitor to Nicaragua. Unfortunately, the coastal roads in Nicaragua are not very accessible to say the least and so really the best way to see all these beaches is by sailing the open sea! Boarding a catamaran sailboat stocked with ceviche, guacamole and as much beer and rum as possible is the way we like to do it to fully enjoy spending the day gawking at the stunning natural setting while at the same time, throwing down and having a party fit for such a glorious sailing experience. Oh and we almost forgot to mention the wicked surf breaks at almost all of these beaches, so there's always the option of tossing the board in and paddling into some gnarly sets before continuing on our way. Some crazy stuff tends to go down on this adventure as it's always a highlight of the trip, but you'll just have to experience it for yourself to see what's possible when you disembark into the Nicaragua's pacific coast with an arsenal of friends armed with all the makings for an epic good time!

Beach Cleanup

Our Trash Hero beach cleanups are a great way to do good, feel good, and get some beach all at the same time. With thousands of tons of trash swirling around the oceans, the unfortunate reality is that some of it washes up onto the beautiful beaches we fall in love with around the world. So we thought ‘Let’s do something about this!’ Our partnership with Trash Hero began in Koh Lipe, Thailand, where they regularly organized beach cleanup days. Today, Trash Hero has gone viral and can be found operating in Thailand and Indonesia, and is spreading into dozens more countries at a rapid pace. On our end, beach cleanup day quickly became one of the most fun and rewarding days on our Thailand trip. So we decided to spread the love, and have instituted a beach cleanup day into our regular itineraries across the world. Through our sponsorship and partnership with Trash Hero, our travellers and others like them have since collected tens of thousands of kilograms of trash from the beaches we travel to…and really, there’s nothing more epic than saving the world! ** We will always strive to make a beach cleanup happen, but sometimes we may not be able to make it happen **
