Stop 1 - Athens Athens is one of the world's oldest cities, with its recorded history spanning around 3400 years! Classical Athens was a powerful city-state, a centre for the arts, learning and philosophy, home of Plato's Academy and Aristotle's Lyceum, and the birthplace of democracy and modern thought. History is engrained in everything you see and feel when walking around Athens. Experiencing this amazing city to begin our trip is made all the better by the passionate Greek people and their incredible cuisine! Stop 2 - Santorini The island of Santorini used to be a massive volcano until it erupted in one of the largest tectonic events in history. Eventually most of the volcano sunk into the sea leaving only the eastern rim as a half moon crescent-shaped relic of the ancient volcano. The east coast of the island gently slopes into the sea and the west coast is entirely made up of dramatic cliffs dotted with little towns clinging to the side. Shimmering volcanic black sand beaches around the island add to its beauty and offer great places to relax during the day. But simply exploring this incredible island, visiting the beautiful towns and finding a nice place to enjoy arguably the best sunset in the world is what makes Santorini so memorable! Stop 3 - Ios Ios is a beautiful bohemian island plopped right in the deep blue of the Mediterranean with a cool alternative culture and deep history. In the 1960s Ios became a new waypoint for hippies from all around the world and this is part of the reason why it’s still considered to be the original party island in Greece, and it certainly lives up to its reputation! Today Ios is a stellar mix of day time chilling and night time partying, as exploring the island by bike or ATV or partaking in the various wicked water sports is just as fun as dancing the night away at one of the many chic bars or going to see a concert at the Odysseas Elytis Theatre where there are often festivals going on. So no matter what you're into, Ios is a place to have fun and lots of it! Stop 4 - Crete One of the largest islands in the Mediterranean (Greece's largest), Crete is filled with a fascinating and beautiful history. From Europe's first palace, the Minoan ruins of Knosses, to the seaside Venetian fortresses of Rethymo, to the legendary birthplace of Zeus, to stunning old mosques and Byzantine monasteries. Besides its man-made wonders, Crete boasts a natural beauty of palm tree forests and soaring mountain ranges that cut along the coast and drop down into monumental gorges that reach right out to the sea. When we visit Crete on our trip, we spend an entire day exploring the unforgettable sights on the island before retiring to the lazy beach town of Plakias that is strategically situated along a very long beach and near the hiking trails that lead through the mountains to ancient monasteries. But you’ll find that Lima is hiding a great deal of fun and wonderment within its city limits. When the fog lifts from this massive desert city and you take a closer look around, you’ll find ancient temples strewn amongst modern houses and old, well-preserved colonial mansions over-looking Lima’s coastline, which boasts some wicked surf! A thriving art scene, fascinating museums, some super fun nightclubs and some of the best and most diverse food options of any city in the world, Lima is a complete city that provides a great experience worth much more than just a quick pass through. Stop 2 - Huacachina A very cool destination situated around an oasis surrounded by looming sand dunes that sprawl out far into the distance, Huacachina is a traveler’s refuge. The town itself, positioned around a dream-like picturesque lagoon, has grown into an infamous party spot for travellers in Peru. The surrounding desert dunes offer a playground to Huacachina’s visitors who can bomb up and down the dunes at breakneck speeds in dune buggies or strap on a sand-board and carve down the faces of the sandy mountains. Wine lovers can venture to the nearby vineyards as well and sample the famous Pisco wines. Huacachina is also the jumping point to one of Peru’s greatest wildlife sanctuaries: the Ballestes Islands, known as ‘the mini Galapagos’ on account of the massive concentration of animals living there - including penguins, blue footed boobies, a plethora of different birds and thousands of sea lions! Stop 3 - Cusco The historic capital of the great Inca Empire, the legendary city of Cusco should be on every traveller’s wish list. Situated at a breathtakingly high elevation of 3400m, the cobblestone streets and very well preserved colonial buildings still sit atop the ancient stone foundations laid by the Incas. Around the city, the Andean peaks soar in the backdrop as the lush Amazon jungle and cloud forests encroach closer on the stunning terrain surrounding Cusco. Stop 4 - Machu Picchu Perched high up in the Andes Mountains, surrounded by lush green peaks and misty clouds sits the great lost Incan city of Machu Picchu. 1 of the 7 Wonders of the World and the most renowned archaeological site in the western hemisphere, what more is there to say about Machu Picchu? It's incredible in every way, from its mysterious and elaborate temples to its out-of-this-world location, it's a sight that everyone should aim to see once in their life. The town of Machu Picchu, in the Urubamaba Valley, exists solely as a base camp for people to view the magnificent ruins by day and have a nice place to catch their breath by night.
