Siargao
We save the best for last, and allow more than one week to soak up all that is Siargao. The island is located in the far east of the Philippines, and like Catanduanes is a kind of place where an ice cream freezer in the main town is an exciting new development. This lifestyle is contrasted by the growth of a newly found industry - surfing. There is a unique sort of co-existence that goes on between travelers and locals in Siargao because surfers come to share in the natural environment as opposed to exploit it.
Even though “Cloud 9” is considered the ‘Surf Capital of the Philippines’ and hosts a Billabong international surf competition, the island isn’t overdeveloped and has only a small travel community. Surfers from Brazil, Australia and Hawaii come to enjoy the surf here along with the easy going lifestyle. You can also expect to meet a small number of Canadians and Americans staying at the island who have arrived on Siargao and just got stuck! It is the perfect place to stop your travels and LEARN TO SURF!! Travelers think they are staying for 4 days, and end up staying for 2 months.
Group members who’ve never surfed can hire a surf instructor and long board, and will be out riding waves faster than you can imagine. The water is warm, the scenery is magnificent, and the friendly surf community makes learning enjoyable. There are numerous tiny islands dotting the area of Siargao which the group will explore on a 2-day boat trip. We will visit white sand beaches, go kayaking, snorkel, cliff jump, and spend the night in a hidden lagoon.
On any given night, there are only a couple of bars that everyone goes to, so the community is tight-knit. After spending only one week on the island, you’ll have made local and traveler friends and be dreaming of the surf life you could live. And though “Cloud 9” surf break is the reason that Siargao has tourism, it certainly isn’t the only reason people stay. Our accommodations are right there at ‘Cloud 9’ making for awesome viewing, easy access, and a nice beach to chill at.
