On Dec. 27th, 2004, this tropical paradise was struck by tragedy when the tsunami ripped across the sand bar that much of Phi Phi was built on. Nearly 1000 people were killed, and the tiny island was abandoned indefinitely. The once thriving backpacker destination was expected to fade away, but less than 1 year later a combined effort from locals and foreign travelers had opened the way for tourism- and Free & Easy groups - to return to Phi Phi. We are happy to report that this friendly, festive and laid back island has recovered amazingly and has evolved back into a feel good traveler destination, but one that preserves its unforgettable past.
2 islands make up the Phi Phi Island National Park - both of which are considered some of the most beautiful islands in S.E. Asia. Perfect white sand beaches are scattered in amongst coves and limestone cliffs. The water is warm, crystal clear, and there is an abundance of coral and other exotic tropical sea life. Scuba diving trips are a huge highlight in Phi Phi, but even the snorkeling is mind blowing. The Leonardo Dicaprio movie 'The Beach' was filmed on Phi Phi Leh Island, and there is no doubt why it was chosen to represent the quintessential beach paradise – it is perfect.
The island that we stay on, Phi Phi Don, is famous for its 2 back-to-back crescent shaped beaches. They both have white sand and are separated in the middle by only 250 feet! You can walk up to a phenomenal viewpoint to overlook the beaches and for an awesome view of the sunset. The shopping in Phi Phi is plentiful, and the toughest and most stressful decision of your day will be which restaurant to try out. At night, the atmosphere in Phi Phi comes alive when the island center fills with party goers. You'll have the choice of nightly fire show performances, live rock music, dance parties, and much, much more.
