One of the many temples that are everywhere in the north - photo by Chad Smith

This northern city is one of the ancient capitals of Thailand. In the middle of town is the “Old City” which consists of a section surrounded by a moat and the remains of a decaying wall. This part of town consists of an abundance of winding tiny alleys that lead you to a seemingly endless array of temples, parks, quaint cafes, markets and outdoor live music venues. Our guesthouse is located within these walls meaning all this cool stuff is within walking or biking distance. People fall in love with this simple laid back lifestyle and some who only planned for a 2-day stop never leave!  Alongside the cool cultural sites to check out this city also has an awesome night life to ensure that you don’t go to bed too early. ;)

The North also offers us a glimpse of just how much the culture can vary throughout the country. The northerners are known for being much more laid back and friendlier than the southerners (and they are hard to beat!). Up north you'll find a slow, rural pace of life with new foods, new craftsmanship, new architecture and a new landscape of rolling, lush, green mountains.

Our stop in Chiang Mai will involve a 2-day mountain village tribe trek. We will ride elephants up into the hills, then get off and continue trekking. At night we will stay in a local tribal village where we can witness a unique culture living remotely within Thailand. We will also visit waterfalls, see beautiful mountain vistas and finally hop on a bamboo raft and float through the valley back to where we began.
